Heat stock camp roster, including undrafted All-SEC guard

The Miami Heat have begun moving toward the NBA training-camp limit of 20 players by adding undrafted Mississippi guard Breein Tyree.

Already at the NBA regular-season limit of 15 players under guaranteed contract, the Heat have left open one of their two-way contract slots for potential competition during camp, which opens next month.

Tyree, cousin of New York Giants Super Bowl “Helmet Catch” hero David Tyree, is a two-time All-SEC first-team selection. The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 19.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists as a senior, earning an invitation to the NBA’s virtual pre-draft combine.

The Heat have filled one of their two two-way slots with returning guard Gabe Vincent. The team’s other two-way slot last season was held by former Tennessee forward Kyle Alexander, who was not tendered a qualifying offer this offseason.

Two-way players will be allowed to appear in up to 50 games this season, with no restriction on the amount of time they can spend this season in the NBA. The change was made from the previous 45-day limit of NBA service time during the season due to the coronavirus pandemic and uncertainty about a G League schedule.

The Heat have point guards Goran Dragic and Avery Bradley on their 15-player roster, with Kendrick Nunn, Tyler Herro, Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler often also cast in playmaking roles.

The Heat, according to an NBA source, also have extended a camp invitation to Paul Eboua, a 20-year-old 6-8 forward from Cameroon who spent last season in Italy’s top professional league and then went undrafted.

The 15 players under guaranteed contract to the Heat are Adebayo, Bradley, Butler, Dragic, Herro, Maurice Harkless, Udonis Haslem, Andre Iguodala, Meyers Leonard, Kendrick Nunn, KZ Okpala, Kelly Olynyk, Duncan Robinson and Chris Silva, with first-round pick Precious Achiuwa also holding a guaranteed contract.

The NBA’s 72-game regular season, down from the traditional 82, is scheduled to begin on Dec. 22.
