Heat warning extended into Friday for Modesto area. But is there relief in sight?

The heat wave that started baking Modesto on Sunday is expected to last through Friday evening, but there is relief ahead, forecasters say.

The National Weather Service extended its excessive heat warning in the Northern San Joaquin Valley through Thursday, Sept. 8, at 8 p.m.

Temperatures in the Modesto area are expected to top out at 113 on Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday are expected to hit 108 degrees before Friday drops slightly to 104. Saturday is expected to have a high of 98 degrees, with the real relief coming Sunday, when it’s expected to stay in the upper 80s.

Overnight lows are also staying high, with Tuesday expected to drop only to 80 before returning to the 70s Wednesday and Thursday.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” the NWS recommends. “Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.”

In anticipation of the heat wave, the city of Modesto extended its splash pad season through Sept. 11. The splash pads, which generally close Labor Day weekend, will be open through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. A list of splash pad locations is available at the city’s website.

Several locations throughout Stanislaus County are available as cooling centers through Sept. 11, according to the Stanislaus County Office of Emergency Services Facebook page. Residents also can get updated information at stanemergency.com.
