Mexico must work with United States to secure border

I am aware our government has a treaty with Mexico as to how our two countries would share our southern border.

I am not familiar with its complete content. However, I do not believe that Mexico or any other country should be allowed to interfere with, or restrict in any manner, our country’s right and responsibility to maintain maximum security and sovereignty at our southern border.

No treaties or agreements should be made that would disregard these rights. Mexico should not be allowed to dictate our country’s immigration.

Why would The Bard be on DeSantis list of priorities?

Now it appears Gov. Ron Desantis is going after Shakespeare's plays.

Why is he more obsessed with sex in plays and Floridians' genitalia than he is with rising gas and food prices and insurance companies leaving the state?

He appears to have a perverted set of priorities.

People line up against a border wall as they wait to apply for asylum after crossing the border from Mexico on July 11, 2023, near Yuma. An appeals court on Aug. 3 allowed a rule restricting asylum at the southern border to stay in place. The decision is a major win for the Biden administration, which had argued that the rule was integral to its efforts to maintain order along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Global warming: Pay now or pay more later

America and the world are at a crossroads regarding global warming. We have a choice between investing significant sums now to begin the process of climate mitigation or investing much more later when the multiple crises have compounded.

Few things worth achieving are accomplished without planning, budgeting, compromise and sacrifices equally shared. America needs to recreate itself literally to meet the existential crisis of global warming. The longer we postpone the inevitable, the more arduous and expensive the effort. The lack of significant action now means painful trade-offs lie ahead (including steep reductions in spending for defense, infrastructure improvements and social programs such as health care).

Poor countries collectively will need to spend approximately $2.8 trillion per year “to reduce emissions and protect their economies from climate change,” according to The Economist. Presently, no impoverished nation is committing anything close to its fair share. As a result, rich countries will have to contribute the equivalent of at least $1 trillion annually to make up the shortfall.

Conservative nationalists likely will scream “foul” at these additional foreign expenditures; however, developed countries have contributed greatly to worldwide pollution through the burning of fossil fuels.

Developed countries must be able to capitalize the construction of renewable energy grids, a monumentally expensive project requiring decades to complete. Poor nations can’t afford these conversion costs because they lack the estimated $3 billion each country must spend annually for the next 8 to 10 years on renewable grids.

In spite of the undeniable signs of a planet hurtling toward the “tipping point” beyond which a return to climate normalcy is impossible, many conservatives continue to deny the facts of climate science. Such intentional ignorance related to blind partisanship is unforgivable.

“Real knowledge is to know the extent of one’s ignorance,” as Confucius said.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is presented "The Sword of Liberty" by Moms for Liberty co-founders Tiffany Justice, left, and Tina Descovich and executive director of program outreach Marie Rogerson, during the first Moms for Liberty National Summit last summer in Tampa, Florida. DeSantis is a big supporter of the group.

Moms for Liberty? Alinsky, Hitler propaganda tactics similar

I know my head isn’t the only one exploding after reading Richard C. Silvestri’s letter about banning Moms for Liberty from Facebook.

I was angry at first such a thing would be published in a local paper, urging people to sign a petition supporting the ban, but then I thought, why shouldn’t people see how others can be swayed by far-left groups like the Southern Poverty Law Center and the group that sent him the email, Inequality Media Civic Action?

After all, the Department of Justice tried to label these women domestic terrorists, which opened the door to other unfounded attacks. To lump them in, as the law center did, with the KKK and Proud Boys is pure propaganda and should be seen as such.

The amazing thing is the letter writer doesn’t seem to see the irony of invoking Adolf Hitler, a favorite theme from the left, but in my opinion, the organization he supports does exactly what Hitler and the Nazis did: Spread propaganda and silence their enemies. How else to maintain such tight control over the population except through fear and intimidation?

If the writer wants to read a more relevant book, in addition to reading "The Rise and Fall of The Third Reich," might I suggest he also read "Rules for Radicals" by Saul Alinsky, an early influencer of Barack Obama? It advises his followers to find an “external antagonist” to turn into a common enemy for the “community.”

We saw this in what they did and continue to do to Donald Trump, but we also see it done to any politician or group the left fears might take away its power or threaten its ideology. Forget campaigning, let’s just indict, threaten and silence the other side.

This isn’t new; they have been crafting this for some time now. The playbook is way too familiar and yet people still fall for it.

No similarities between Hitler, DeSantis strategies?

In reply to a letter in the July 26 newspaper, I would like to remind a writer the Nazi horror did not start with death camps. The horror began when the unhappy German population was convinced to vote for Adolf Hitler.

After he gained power, he began maneuvering for absolute power and that's when his war on humanity found its footing. The regime started with the banning of books, then the proliferation of the pogroms that had, through history, plagued Jewish populations of Europe.

Then came the laws that discriminated against those who did not agree with the regime's drastic changes. Then came the requirement of all those of the Jewish faith to wear identifying yellow stars to make the harsh treatment of them much easier to disseminate.

Do you recognize the similarities with the DeSantis administration yet?

The difference is instead of railing against Jews, Roma and "others" chosen for destruction, Gov. Ron DeSantis has chosen to rail against transgender youth and adults, homosexuals, brown-skinned immigrants, drag shows, women of child-bearing age and all those who disagree with his mean-spirited policies.

The current GOP has gone beyond ignorance and prejudicial bias; now, its front-runners for the next presidency are a much-indicted former president and DeSantis, who has nothing to offer but hateful diatribes. I feel badly for those who have been hoodwinked into sending their hard-earned dollars to these politicians, who are using these donations to create havoc and spread division within our beloved country with lies, lies and more lies.

The GOP seems to have morphed into a cult of misinformation and adulation of power-mongers thanks to entertainment sources that pretend to be news sources.

Trump's alleged crimes call for no bond

What has happened to our justice system? Why isn't Donald Trump being held in jail with no bail?

What he is accused of caused several people to have their lives taken away. If it were you or me, we would not be on the street. The law would not let us walk freely, saying we did nothing wrong.

Biden blows it with regard to Hunter's child

So our Illustrious president who wishes all of us to think of him as a family man has now, since he's up for re-election, acknowledged his seventh grandchild.

I have news for him: Acknowledging this lovely, innocent little girl is a far cry from accepting her and treating her in a similar manner as he does the other six. If anyone is to blame for her situation, it's no one but Hunter Biden, the prodigal son.

Maybe this situation will come to bite Joe in his derriere just like his dog keeps biting his staff members.

Bad news driving suicides?

I just finished reading an article here about how suicides in the United States have increased considerably.

Then there were stories about fires in Hawaii resulting in multiple deaths, how the stock market could plunge, how Black people are discriminated against and a former president was going to court. My emotional feeling at that point was depressing.

I realized that it was these stories that brought on the depression and must have the same effect on those that may think of suicide. The conclusion I reached is that people would be better off not reading newspapers or watching the news since it is always bad news and sensational when they can do so to increase sales or ratings.

So I no longer will watch or listen to the news, and other than the sports page, will use the rest of the paper in the bathroom.
