When will the heat wave be over? Relief may be on a slow train for Cape Cod.

The hot skillet session of Cape Cod weather looks to be drawing to a close, at least for a while. While a heat advisory remains in effect for the Cape until 8 p.m. Tuesday , there are signs that cooler and drier air is on the way to our sizzling peninsula.

But it looks like it will be a murky weather journey through the mid-week, as a slow-moving front bringing relief dances a slow tango with the hot sponge currently in place. The eventual payoff? "Seasonable, with much lower humidity Friday into next weekend," according to the National Weather Service Norton/Boston office forecast discussion.

Bill Simpson, spokesman for the Norton weather office, said on Monday that forecasters are still trying to figure out how the mid-week weather will play out.

While some weather systems have clearly predictable velocity, in this case, we are dealing with a "stalled frontal boundary" according to the forecast discussion, that will eventually bring cooler and drier air to the region.

"We don't know where that frontal boundary is going to go," said Simpson, who added that the picture will be clearer as the week progresses.

"It doesn't look like we'll have a lot of rain, but there could be periods of showers," he said about the murky mid-week period.

Is there a drought on Cape Cod?

Any rain will be welcome, as Barnstable County is now in the "Severe Drought" category, according to the National Integrated Drought Information System. Perhaps the only slight silver lining to that parched designation is that certain mosquito populations have less wet territory to reproduce in, according to Gabrielle Sakolsky, superintendent of the Cape Cod Mosquito Control Project.

"The swamps are dry," she said.

On the bright side, the upcoming weekend looks fantastic, with nighttime temperatures dipping into the mid-60s. But the hot weather may not be over. According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, temperatures on Cape Cod look to be above normal for the rest of the month.
