Heather Hora wins Iowa House District 92 Republican primary; Bopp drops out of Democratic race

With 100% of precincts reporting Tuesday, Heather Hora won the Republican nomination in the Iowa House District 92 primary election.

House District 92 covers all of Washington County and portions of southern and western Johnson County, including the cities of Lone Tree and Hills.

Hora defeated Jaron Rosien. The raw vote count is 1,495 votes (64%) for Hora, and 840 votes (36%) for Rosien. There were two write-in votes and a total 2,337 votes cast in this race.

In Johnson County, Hora received 314 votes (79.1%) while Rosien received 82 votes (20.65%). In Washington County, Hora received 1,181 votes (60.9%) and Rosien received 758 votes (39.1%).

Hora, 52, is a resident of Washington, where she and her husband Kurt live with their three children on their fifth-generation family farm. Hora was born in Iowa City but grew up in Minneapolis, eventually coming back to Iowa to attend Highland Community School District.

Hora and her husband actively participate in political lobbying for Iowa pork and corn production. She also served on the Iowa Pork Producers Association Board while her husband is a former president of the Iowa Corn Growers Association.

Rosien, 37, is serving his fourth year as mayor of Washington.

He was born in Washington and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in psychology. Starting in 2014, he served on the Washington City Council and has owned his own restaurant, JP's 207 off the city square, since 2012.

Hora was set to face Democrat Ty Bopp in the general election, but according to the Southeast Iowa Union, Bopp dropped out of the race in April. Bopp still appeared on the ballot after submitting the necessary paperwork and signatures.

The district is one of several open seats representing Johnson County on the primary ballot, including three other Iowa House seats and one Iowa Senate seat.

Election results are unofficial until certified by the Washington and Johnson County boards of supervisors next week.
