Heating Brewers stadium for winter events could negate Milwaukee's net zero goal | Letters

Milwaukee Brewers fans wave playoff towels in the moments before a National League wild-card playoff game Oct. 3, 2023, at American Family Field. The Brewers lost the postseason series to the Arizona Diamondbacks in two games.

American Family Field is a massive piece of infrastructure, and it makes sense to use it to the fullest. But I was concerned seeing Rep. Robert Brooks’ promise that renovations would make the stadium “a year-round facility… even when it’s 10 below outside,” (“Follow Rays’ lead on ballpark?” Sept. 24).

Milwaukee has a goal to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 or sooner. The new Brewers lease would go through 2050.

Letters to the Editor: Why are we spending tax dollars on American Family Field for team with wealthy owner?

I hope someone is thinking about how to make these renovations consistent with the net zero goal. There are definitely ways to heat a large space without greenhouse gas emissions, such as geothermal. If we are going to help the Brewers be fiscally sustainable, it is fair to ask them to be environmentally sustainable as well.
