At about 5:40 p.m., officers with the Brookhaven Police Department responded to the Town Brookhaven shopping center at the intersection of Peachtree Road and Town Boulevard in reference to calls reporting a man armed with a knife.

Callers told police the man was walking around the shopping center yelling at customers.

Responding officers located the man near the entrance of the shopping center.

Police say officers attempted to speak to the man, but he became angry and threw his drink at the officers.

One of the officers fired a stun gun at the man, but it was ineffective.

According to police, the man charged at the officers and one of the officers fired his gun, hitting the man.

Brookhaven Police Chief Brandon Gurley said the suspect later died from his injuries at Grady Memorial Hospital.

During the incident, police say the man dropped a saw blade on the ground.

“We have found video. Not only the officer’s body-worn camera that the GBI will be using, but cameras in the area that they are looking at to see if they too help capture any of the incident or the scene,” Gurley said.

NewsChopper 2 was over the scene, where there were multiple police cars and crime scene tape strung up across the entrance of the shopping center.
