Update: Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office held a briefing about the shooting just shortly after 6 p.m. on Thursday.
According to JSO, patrol units were in a nearby parking lot that was unrelated to the shooting. There, they heard multiple gunshots at 5101 Gate Pkwy at around 2:11 p.m.
Officers responded to the area and found a man and woman in the grass, both suffering from gunshot wounds to the upper body. Police provided first aid to the victims.
The victims were taken to a local hospital where the woman did die from her injuries.
Officials are currently investigating the scene and looking to see if there were any witnesses. At the briefing, an official said that a gun was recovered at the scene.
A spokesman for JSO said that a conversation did occur outside of a business in the area before the gunshots were heard. JSO does not know if there was any relationship between those involved in the shooting.
The victims have not yet been identified.
Original Story: Action News Jax is on the scene of a heavy police presence in the Deerwood area.
A witness and a source told us a shooting took place. Crime scene tape was up around what looks to be a medical park near the intersection of Burnt Mill Road and Gate Parkway.
Jarret Dukes was in the area Thursday afternoon. He told Action News Jax’s Nick Gibson things like this don’t typically happen in this area, especially just south of the Town Center area.
“It’s crazy. You can’t even get around some of these streets, they have everything blocked off. It’s something that you expect to see on TV and not in real life, in person,” Dukes said.
