Heavy rain Friday: Flash flood warning in place for areas of Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky

Update, 2 p.m.: The NWS has issued a flash flood warning for portions of Northern Kentucky and Southwest Ohio, in place until 5 p.m. Friday.

Areas under the warning include Bracken, Campbell, Grant, Kenton and Pendleton counties in Kentucky and Clermont County in Ohio.

Radar has indicated that thunderstorms will produce heavy rain across those areas. Additional rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches are possible. Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses and other poor drainage or low-lying areas is ongoing or expected to being shortly.

Move to higher ground now. Flash flooding can be reported at weather.gov/iln, or reports can be submitted via social media.

Previous reporting: A flood advisory is in effect for areas around Cincinnati on Friday morning, thanks to excessive rainfall.

Heavy rain is expected to cause traffic issues with wet roads and reduced visibility.

Portions of Northern Kentucky, including Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties and Southwest Ohio, including Hamilton County are affected until 8:45 a.m.., according to the National Weather Service.

Between 1 and 1.5 inches of rain has already fallen as of just after 5:40 a.m., and minor flooding is likely in low-lying and poor drainage areas.

Some specific locations that may experience flooding include: Cincinnati, Covington, Florence, Independence, Norwood, Erlanger, Fort Thomas, Newport, Reading, Edgewood, Elsmere, Wyoming, Cheviot, Fort Mitchell, Villa Hills, Taylor Mill, Bellevue, Fort Wright, Dayton and Ludlow.

The NWS warns drivers to "turn around, and don't drown" when encountering flooded roads, as most flood deaths occur in vehicles. When encountering heavy rain, slow down to avoid hydroplaning and leave extra space between you and the vehicle in front of you.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue throughout Friday and Friday night, with a chance of showers on Saturday. Sunday through the beginning of the week is forecasted to be clear, with temperatures reaching highs in the 70s and 80s.

What's the Ohio River level in Cincinnati?

As of 5 a.m. Friday, the Ohio River at Cincinnati was observed at 31.34 feet, well below the flood stage of 52 feet.

River levels are expected to steadily rise over the next few days, reaching an action stage of 42.5 feet by the early morning of May 10.

Saturday: Cloudy, with a high near 61. A chance of showers, mainly before 8 a.m. Saturday night, mostly cloudy with a low around 48.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 70. Sunday night, partly cloudy with a low around 52.

Monday: Sunny, with a high near 80.

Tuesday: Sunny, with a high near 85.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 86.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 85.
