Heavy Snow Makes Roads 'Impassable' in South Dakota

Authorities in South Dakota urged residents to stay home as heavy snow made roads “impassable,” and forecasts threatened worsened conditions on Wednesday, December 14.

Video from the Spearfish Police Department shows road conditions as of 4 am Wednesday. The National Weather Service (NWS) said blizzard conditions would continue into Wednesday night.

“If you are out on the roads in the City of Spearfish, you are subject to being ticketed. As a reminder simply seeing that some of the arterial and secondary routes are being cleared or the fact that you have a really awesome vehicle, is not permission to be out on the roads,” the post read. “PLEASE stay home and do not become an obstacle snow removal operators and emergency responders have to deal with. We will evaluate and update as the day progresses.” Credit: Spearfish Police Department via Storyful
