HEB Revises List Of Purchase Limits On Some Items Amid COVID-19

AUSTIN, TX — HEB — the state's dominant grocery store chain — recently shortened its list of product purchase limits again as a safeguard against hoarding in a time of pandemic.

Under the revised list, a handful of non-food items remain under the purchase limits restriction, according to the grocer's website. The company first placed limits on certain products that were in high demand amid the outbreak of respiratory illness — toilet paper, disinfectants and some meats — in March to inhibit hoarding fueled by panic buying.

Since then, fewer and fewer items fall under purchase limits restrictions. The last revision on Aug. 27 includes half a dozen items limited to two each per purchase:

Food items

  • Brisket.

Non-food items

  • Disinfecting and antibacterial sprays.

  • Disinfecting and antibacterial wipes.

  • Hydrogen peroxide.

  • Rubbing (Isopropyl) alcohol/swabs.

  • First aid and cleaning gloves.

Items such as Acetaminophen, hand soap and sanitizer were removed from the list after having been subject to limits for several months.

Stores along the U.S.-Mexico border have implemented even more stringent limits on disinfecting and antibacterial sprays and wipes, limiting such purchases to one item per customer, according to the HEB website. Yet the product limits do not apply to Central Market stores, officials noted. Click here for Central Market product limits.

On its website, the grocer explained the need for restrictions: "To help protect the supply chain in Texas, we’ve implemented temporary purchase limits on certain items. Limiting product purchases is a proven way to ensure the best service and product availability for all customers. Our stores are in strong supply and we continue to restock products daily."
