Heidelberg knocks off No. 2-ranked Mount Union men's basketball team

TIFFIN ― The No. 2 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team dropped their first game of the season 82-70 in their Ohio Athletic Conference opener to Heidelberg on Saturday.

The Purple Raiders (5-1, 0-1 OAC) had three double-digit scorers and were led by junior Christian Parker, who scored a game-high 24 points. Senior Darrell Newsom and freshman Corey Hudson both scored 14 points.

The Student Princes (6-1, 2-0 OAC) were led by Seth Hohman who scored a team-high 15 points and Tre Watkins who scored 14 points.

Heidelberg used an 11-3 run over the final 5 minutes, 43 seconds of the first half to break from a 25-all tie. Mount Union got back to within seven points, 54-47, with just over 10 minutes remaining, but that was as close as they got.

Mount Union women rout Heidelberg

The Mount Union women's basketball team opened OAC play with an 80-46 rout of Heidelberg.

The Purple Raiders (4-3, 1-0 OAC) were led by seniors Gretchen Kokan and Emma Cannon. Koken had a game-high 16 points to go along with 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Cannon scored 13 points.

Mount Union had three more scorers in the double digits ― sophomores Ali Hudik and Hailey Haywood and freshman Sierra Schlosser all scored 10.

Heidelberg (1-5, 0-2 OAC) was led by Hallie Rogers' 10 points.

Mount Union led 14-10 after one quarter then extended its lead to 38-23 at halftime. The Purple Raiders led 41-34 with 4:33 to go in the third quarter before closing out with an 18-2 run.

Both Mount Union teams play John Carroll on Wednesday. The men's game is at home and the women's game is on the road, both starting at 7 p.m.
