NEW HEIGHTS: Howze, Shelley other former area stars excel on next level

Following is a glance at how former area prep stars have fared in recent college competition.

AIDAN HOWZE

(Bartlesville)

Kansas women’s swimming

In her college debut, Howze burst to third place in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.64) in a four-team competition.

Howze also surged to seventh place in the 200 individual medley (2:11.51).

No lineups for the relay teams were listed in the results.

Kansas won going away, scoring 677 points, followed by the University of Saint Mary (386), Barton Community College (308) and Sterling College (252).

Howze is the fifth former Bartlesville Lady Bruin to swim for Kansas. The others included Haley Downey, Kate Steward, Greta Olsen and Erin Downey.

Howze played a pivotal role last winter in Bartlesville High’s girls swimming success.

Central Oklahoma women’s golf

Shelley is off to a sizzling start in the fall season, shooting all sub-80 rounds.

In the Dallas Baptist Classic, she finished third for UCO by shooting 234 (76-79-79), which was good for 76th overall.

At the Grace Shin Invitational, Shelley tallied 154 (78-76) to come in third in the UCO field and 18th overall. She nailed two birdies the second round.

Shelley came in second for UCO by firing 158 at the Lady Tiger Classic in Hays, Kan. UCO finished 16th. Shelley shot par on 21 of the 36 holes.

CHESNIE HEWITT

(Oklahoma Union)

Murray State softball

Hewitt belted a hit and drove in a run in a 4-2 triumph against Southeastern State.

While batting at the top of the order, she doubled and scoring the tying run in the top of the seven in a 6-5 win against East Central. Hewitt also drove in two runs.

Hewitt also doubled and single in a 9-2 rout of Midwestern.

Murray State owns a 6-3-1 record in fall ball.

BRAEDEN WINTERS

(Bartlesville)

Southeastern Oklahoma football

Winters contributed a tackle in a loss to Henderson State and recorded a short kickoff return in a setback against Southern Nazarene.

ELENA FRIES

(Bartlesville)

Rogers State cross country

Fries surged to 33rd overall and second (19:21.8) for the team in the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark. Rogers State finished fourth.

KENZIE HENDRIX

(Wesleyan Christian)

Ark Tech cross country

Hendrix ran the team’s 11th best time, and finished 17th overall (20:12.0) at the Steve Guymon Invitational in Harding, Ark.

MIA OTTEN

(Bartlesville)

Dayton volleyball

Otten appears to be finding her stroke.

She crushed seven kills and assisted on three kills in a loss against Davidson.

She produced nine kills in 17 attacks in a win against Fordham.
