Heikki Lunta starts on Friday in the City of Negaunee

NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WJMN) – Heikki Lunta is kicking off this Friday in the city of Negaunee. The winter celebration has many family fun events and activities planned.

“Coming up this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday this weekend, Negaunee will be having Heikki Lunta 2024 and we will be kicking it off with rail jam,” said Nate Heffron, Negaunee City Manager. ” I think we are going to see a little bit more attendance, it is usually well attended but out is a little warmer. It might get some people that are sick of the winter even though we have barely had any, but they are getting cabin fever, or stuck in the house, maybe they want to come out and see a few things going on. The weather is warmer outside, so I think we are going to see that and see a few differences in how activities are portrayed.”

The only event that has been cancelled so far is the Teal Lake Ice Fishing Tournament. They decided to cancel it due to the ice not being reliable to accommodate for many people.

“They went and tested the ice and determined that is was not really safe. Also, the DNR also put out several warnings saying they recommend not being out on the ice,” said Heffron. “From what I understand is that it has been postponed, so I assumed if we are lucky that a couple nights of cold weather and maybe that can get that coming up here in a few weeks or so.”
