Helfrich says he won't seek re-election as York mayor in 2025, endorses Mike Muldrow

If things go the way York Mayor Mike Helfrich wants in 2025, the city will have a mayor named Mike for at least four more years.

The two-term mayor announced at the city's New Year's Eve celebration that he was not going to seek re-election in 2025 and that he was endorsing the candidacy of York Police Commissioner Mike Muldrow.

"I think that after six years on city council and eight years at mayor, it's a good time to have new leadership," Helfrich said Tuesday morning. "It's a good time for someone else to take the reins."

Helfrich, first elected in 2017 after serving as the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper, also announced his endorsement of Muldrow to be that someone else.

"I've really been impressed working with Commissioner Muldrow," the mayor said. "He has all the love of the city and the skills to represent York and take us forward."

Muldrow did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But in a statement released to ABC 27 News after his announcement, he wrote, “I’m proud of the opportunities this community has given me and the things I’ve been able to accomplish because of them. I’m truly excited by the prospect of serving as mayor — not for the title, not as a next step to something different. I’m looking at that office for one reason only: the platform it will afford me to get things done, create opportunities for others and continue helping my community grow.
