The Hellboy reboot – which stars Strangers Things David Harbour in the titular role – has ended its US box office run with a pretty disastrous total.

Box Office Mojo reports the film has grossed just $21.9 million during its five-week run, following an opening weekend where it took $12.05 million.

It's a far cry from the film's $50 million production budget and it's far less than the total amount taken by the original 2004 movie which starred Ron Perlman.

The first Hellboy movie, which was directed by Guillermo del Toro, grossed $99.4 million worldwide against a budget of $66 million. The 2008 follow-up, Hellboy II: The Golden Army, took over $160 million globally with a budget of $85 million.

The reboot was also not a hit with critics, with Digital Spy awarding the movie two stars. Following its release, star Milla Jovovich hit back at the critics, saying all her best movies had bad reviews.

In an Instagram post, Mila wrote: "It's always stressful on opening weekend and @hellboymovie is no different. You work super hard to make something fun and entertaining and have to absorb the negative reviews by movie critics, but hey! THAT'S SHOWBIZ BABY.

"All I'm gonna say before going to bed is this: All my raddest films have been slammed by critics. It's f**king hilarious. Dazed and Confused? Seriously? Classic movie.

"The Fifth Element! You would have thought that was the worst movie ever made if you read the reviews in like '98."

The 2019 Hellboy stars David Harbour, Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, Daniel Dae Kim and Thomas Haden Church.

Hellboy is out now in the UK and US.
