An estimated 25,000 bikers are expected to arrive in the Myrtle Beach area from Oct. 2 through Oct. 8. for the 2023 Fall Motorcycle Rally. And since helmet laws vary by state, if you’re going to the bike rally, you’ll want to know the requirements so a ticket doesn’t dampen your fun.

Do I have to wear a helmet in South Carolina?

If you are 21 or older, you are not required to wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle in South Carolina. Anyone under 21, whether they are a driver or a passenger, has to wear one under S.C. law.

What about in North Carolina?

If you take a jaunt across the state line to visit Calabash or Ocean Isle Beach, be sure to bring your gear. In North Carolina, all motorcyclists and passengers, no matter their age, must wear a helmet.

Have these laws always been the same?

In 2008, the City of Myrtle Beach started requiring helmets for all motorcyclists within city limits, which was more restrictive than the rest of the state. The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled the law unconstitutional in 2010.
