Help wanted: Postal Service, UPS, Sky Harbor, other employers gear up for late-year hiring

The thermometer still might read more than 100 degrees, but Phoenix-area employers are starting to gear up for the holiday shopping season, while others seek to fill ongoing labor needs at a time when the Arizona jobless rate hovers around 3.3%.

Several large employers are holding upcoming job fairs or other hiring events. Some examples:

UPS hiring big for holidays

Package-delivery giant UPS said it expects to hire around 2,820 seasonal employees in the Phoenix metro area ahead of the holiday rush.

Using a streamlined process, UPS allows job seekers to fill out online applications and get hired in about 25 minutes. Nearly four in five seasonal positions don’t require an interview, the company said.

Available full- and part-time seasonal positions include drivers, package handlers and driver helpers. Seasonal package car-driver positions begin at $21 per hour, as do tractor-trailer driver positions.

Nearly 35,000 seasonal employees nationally earned permanent positions at UPS after the 2021 holidays. The company said its full-time package delivery drivers earn an average of $95,000 per year, plus $50,000 in contributions to health, wellness and pension benefits. Among other benefits, eligible employees have the opportunity to earn up to $25,000 lifetime for college tuition and expenses.

Postal Service has 800 open positions

The U.S. Postal Service will host a job fair Friday, Sept. 9, in hopes of filling more than 800 open positions in Arizona, including around 400 in metro Phoenix.

The event will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at El Zaribah Shrine Auditorium, 545 N. 40th St. in Phoenix.

The service has openings for carriers, mail handlers, support employees, automotive technicians and other positions.

Starting pay ranges from $17.32 to $27.52 per hour, depending on the position. Benefits include regular pay increases, paid vacation leave and health insurance.

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older (or 16-plus with a diploma) and must be able to pass a criminal background investigation that includes a five-year residency requirement.

Seasonal warehouse work available

Geodis, a logistics and transport company, is seeking to hire about 350 seasonal workers in the Phoenix metro area for the peak holiday season, with many of the opportunities in warehouse and distribution-center positions.

The company expects healthy consumer spending this year, after record 2021 holiday sales, as supply chains continue to stabilize. Geodis employs more than 13,000 people across the U.S. and Canada.

The company says it offers competitive pay, referral bonuses, flexible schedules where feasible and choices between part- and full-time seasonal work.

Positions open at Michaels stores

Michaels, the specialty arts and crafts retailer, is planning to fill 265 seasonal positions in metro Phoenix and others elsewhere in Arizona in preparation for the 2022 holiday shopping season. Michaels hopes to fill around 15,000 seasonal store and distribution-center positions across the U.S. and Canada.
