BELLMORE-MERRICK, NY — With many graduations, proms and other school events facing an uncertain future due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and the Town Board wanted to ensure that the top students of America’s largest township had an opportunity to be recognized for their outstanding educational achievements.

On Wednesday, May 27, the Town Board welcomed valedictorians and salutatorians from every corner of the Town of Hempstead to a safe, socially distanced event at Merrick Golf Course.

“Hempstead Town’s valedictorians and salutatorians maintained their commitment to education during one of the most difficult periods in our nation’s history,” Clavin said. “Their commitment, dedication and ability to adapt to change are all qualities that will serve them well in the future, and we are confident that they will continue to make us proud in the years to come.”

Clavin recognized students from high schools across the Town of Hempstead, inviting them to be a part of an aerial photo with a congratulatory banner to provide the valedictorians and salutatorians with a memory of their special year. Nearly 40 students, separated into smaller groups for the photos, were in attendance at the special ceremony.

Representing John F. Kennedy High School were valedictorian Katherine St George and salutatorian Madeline Jutsen. Attending the event from Sanford H. Calhoun High School was valedictorian Marc Edayadi. Representing Wellington C. Mepham High School were valedictorian Alyssa Dioguardi and salutatorian Spencer Mattes.

“In the future, my hope is that these young men and women can look back at these photos and tell their families about how they managed to overcome adversity during the pandemic and still achieve their goals,” Clavin said. “These young men and women are going to be key leaders of our society for years to come, and I commend them for their accomplishments at such a young age."
