Henderson Institute will celebrate 46th reunion

Aug. 29—HENDERSON — The Henderson Institute Alumni Association will hold its 46th Annual School Reunion on Friday, Sept. 2, and Saturday, Sept. 3, Labor Day weekend.

"We look forward to a wonderful time," Henderson Institute Association Vice-Chairman Larry Carroll said. "We're hoping to have a very successful reunion."

This will be the first in-person reunion since 2019. Reunions in 2020 and 2021 were canceled due to COVID-19. The last two meetings were held via Zoom. Activities this weekend will be held at multiple venues.

Friday, Sept. 2

— Golf Tournament, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Kerr Lake Country Club.

— Registration, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Vance-Granville Community College.

— Bid Whist Tournament, 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Vance-Granville Community College.

— Meet and Greet, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Vance-Granville Community College.

— Bowling Tournament, 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Before the 1st Frame.

Saturday, Sept. 3

Brunch, 9:30 a.m.,

— Vance-Granville Community College.

— Business Meeting, 11 a.m., Vance-Granville Community College.

— Museum Open, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

— Reunion Banquet, 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Vance-Granville Community College.

Reunion Dance, 9 p.m.

— to 1 a.m., Crossroads Event Center.

Class of 1970 hosts

Carroll said attendees should come prepared to wear masks and that organizers are "following all [U.S. Centers for Disease Control] guidelines."

The class of 1970 will host the banquet, at which Charlotte resident and class of 1970 Elnora Hicks Rainey will be the speaker. Rainey was the class of 1970 valedictorian and a cum laude graduate of Shaw University. An Aetna Life and Casualty Insurance Co. retiree, she is now a member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church of Charlotte, the Eastern Star, and the American Red Cross, from which she has received her 50-gallon pin. Rainey is the mother of one and the grandmother of three.

"I'd like to say that the Henderson Institute alumni are very excited for the upcoming reunion," Association President Calvin Thompson said. "The planning committee has done an excellent job in planning a safe event."

Alumni look forward to "Taking that trip back down memory lane," swapping memories and accomplishments, Thompson said. "We're excited for a great reunion weekend."
