Sep. 25—HENDERSON — Henderson native Leah Hinton, now based in New York, released her new R&B pop single "Away" Friday. A lyric video and official music video will follow in the next few weeks.

The single was produced by North Carolina native Daniel "DocJunya" Hargrove. It also features Hinton's Berklee College of Music classmate, rapper Jordon Peace.

"I've always loved music and singing," Hinton said. "I started taking singing and piano lessons when I was about 6 or 7 years old and grew to love it."

Hinton sang in various community, school and church choirs growing up. She said her love for jazz and R&B was influenced by her father who would always play jazz music during her childhood.

While in college, she released her first single called "Easy To Love."

"Music is definitely an amazing way to find expression, creative expression," Hinton said. "It's a great way to express who you are, what you enjoy, how you're feeling, and putting words and melodies together. It's a really cool way to share that emotion, thought, or situation with someone in another language. It's another way to communicate with others."

Before pursuing her music full time, Hinton was a music teacher at Stovall-Shaw Elementary School in Granville County.

Hinton plans on releasing another single in late fall or early spring. Leah says her next steps are to begin to work on her album. She hopes one day to come back to Henderson and perform.

Leah's music can be found on Youtube, Spotify, www.leahhinton.com, iTunes, Amazon, and more.
