Hendersonville Police: Pedestrian struck, killed on U.S. 64 near Interstate 26 bridge

The Hendersonville Police Department reported a male pedestrian was struck and killed on Feb. 24 on the east side of the U.S. 64 bridge that goes over Interstate 26.

According to a news release, officers first responded to a call at 6:54 p.m. Feb. 24 about a male stumbling in the roadway in the area of the intersection of Orr's Camp Road and Four Seasons Boulevard. As they were attempting to locate the pedestrian, another 911 call came in about a motor vehicle accident just before the I-26 bridge on the eastbound side, the release said.

Investigators determined a driver was traveling east on U.S. 64 and collided with the male pedestrianat approximately 7 p.m. Two lanes of U.S. 64 West were temporarily closed to allow emergencypersonnel to access the injured pedestrian.

The pedestrian was transported to UNC Health Pardee before being flown to Mission Hospital, where he succumbed to the injuries sustained in the crash, according to the release. Police determined that the pedestrian was intoxicated, and no charges were filed against the driver.

Police reported that the pedestrian was homeless. Officers are still working to make next-of-kin notification before releasing the victim's name.
