Hendrick Hospice Care was placed in the top 11 percent of national hospice providers recently by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, according to a release. Out of 2,046 providers measured, only 229 were placed in the top ranking.

Statewide, Hendrick Hospice is one of 18 out of 159 Texas hospice providers to earn the top 5-star rating.

“To have CMS validate our 5-star rating based on the care experiences of our patients and their families is an absolute honor,” said Karen Tucek, director for Hendrick Hospice Care. “This recognition demonstrates our hospice team’s compassionate, patient-centered care that is focused on attention to detail and quality improvement.”

The ratings are taken from eight quarters of data recorded by CMS in a family caregiver survey between Oct. 1, 2020 and Sept. 30, 2022. CMS publishes the data on its website as a resource for consumers researching hospice care. The survey measures eight major categories including the timely receipt of help, respect given to patients and willingness to recommend the hospice provider.

Hendrick Hospice Care is a nonprofit and the oldest hospice in the area, serving the 65-mile radius around Abilene since 1983. The care is provided at Hendrick Hospice Care Center and in homes, nursing facilities, assisted living facilities and hospitals. The hospice team includes physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, volunteers and others. Bereavement services are also offered, such as Camp Courage and Club Courage for children.

“Each member of our team sees hospice care as an extraordinary ministry when families call upon us to be part of a loved one’s end-of-life journey,” Tucek said.
