Henry Brummel on his game as Pontiac shuts out Central Catholic

Henry Brummel had minor control issues but he did not allow any runs as he pitched Pontiac to a 10-0 victory over Central Catholic in an Illini Prairie Conference baseball game Monday at the The Ballpark at Williamson Field.

Brummel walked four Saints but allowed just two singles in the five-inning game.

Pontiac's offense, including Brummel, gave its hurler some run support in the third inning when it erupted for four runs. Alex Trevino led off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Colin Gould and Logan Barnett each walked with one out to load the bases.

Brummel drove a two-base hit to left to plate Trevino and Gould with the first two runs of the game. Parker Francis singled to plate courtesy runners Tanner Legner and Dakoda Ackerman to make it 4-0.

The Indians put the game away in the last of the fifth inning. Johnny Lenox and Brummel drew walks to lead off the inning. Lenox and Ackerman, the runner for Brummel, scored on an error with Francis at the plate.

Francis, Cam Fenton and Drew Wayman each singled to load the bases before Trevino smacked the fourth straight single to drive in Francis and Fenton.

The game ended when Michael Kuska tripled to drive in Wayman and Trevino with the final two runs.

Francis and Trevino each had two hits and one run batted in while Kuska had a triple and two RBIs for Pontiac (8-10). Brummel had a double drove in two runs while Lenox, Fenton and Wayman each singled.

IVC 11, Prairie Central 1

FAIRBURY — Illinois Valley Central collected more free passes than base hits as the Grey Ghosts topped Prairie Central 11-1 in an Illini Prairie Conference baseball game Monday at The Diamonds at Lewis Field.

A trio of Prairie Central pitching walked 11 IVC batters in the seven-inning contest. The Grey Ghosts managed eight safeties.

IVC touched PC starter Seth Rigsby for single runs in the first and second frames, and then struck for two runs off reliever Jack Schahrer in the third to take a 4-0 lead. Schahrer shut down IVC in the fourth fifth innings but ran into trouble in the sixth as the Ghosts scored twice.

Carson Friedman came on in the seventh and allowed five runs as IVC took an 11-0 lead.

The Hawks avoided the shut out with a run in the bottom fo the seventh. Evan Hartman and C Gibson each singled to open the seventh. Ivan Miller reached on an error to load the bases.

Noah Nagel lofted a sacrifice fly that plated Hartman.

Owen Rafferty had two hits for the Hawks (7-15). DJ Lewis, Hartman, Hunter Chambers, Gibson and Schahrer each singled.

Rigsby took the loss after allowing two runs, one hit and six walks in two innings. He fanned three. Schahrer gave up four runs, four hits and two walks while striking out four in four innings. Friedman yielded five runs, three hits and three walks in one inning.

GSW 8, Dwight 2

DWIGHT — Gardner-South Wilmington scored in its first two innings at bat and then held off Dwight's in claiming an 8-2 nonconference victory Monday at The Dwight Fields.

The Panthers scored five runs in the first inning and added three in the second for an 8-0 lead.

The Trojans got one run in the third inning and one more in the sixth.

In the DTHS third, Ryan Turner singled with two outs to plate Jacob Watchinski, who reached on a fielder's choice. Luke Gallet doubled in the Dwight sixth and later scored on Jeremy Kapper's fielder's choice grounder.

Gallet had a double while Turner and Daniel Ford each singled.

Starter Jack Denker took the loss after giving up seven runs, three hits and three walks. He struck out one in one-plus innings. Drew Anderson fanned four and walked two while giving up one run and two hits in two innings. Wyatt Stalter allowed two hits and a walk while striking out one in two scoreless innings. Dillon Sarff walked one and struck out one in a scoreless inning.

EPG 4, Heyworth 3

EL PASO — Most of the game's scoring came in the first inning. For host El Paso-Gridley, its tally was just enough to edge past Heyworth in their Heart of Illinois Conference baseball game at South Pointe Park Monday.

After spotting theHornets a couple of runs in the top of the opening frame, the Titans pushed across all their runs and held on for a 4-3 victory.

Mac Raymer and Aiden Jeffreys scored when Jacob Castleman hit a two-run single with the bases loaded to tie the game in the last of the first. A wild pitch allowed Landon Foster to score the go-ahead run and Castleman scored on Dominic Ricconi's sacrifice fly for an insurance marker.

The insurance tally was key as Heyworth scored it third run in the top of the sixth.

Foster had two hits and Castleman had a hit and two runs batted in for the Titans (11-7). Raymer, Jeffreys and Caden Deckard each singled and Ricconi had run batted in.

Raymer got the win after going the first 5 2/3 innings. Raymer allowed three runs, six hits and one walk while striking out nine.
