Herald-Mail Student of the Week: See this week's winner

Jason John Berg has been chosen as the Herald-Mail Student of the Week.

Berg, a senior at Boonsboro High School, was one of seven nominees submitted by local school districts and received the most votes cast online.

Berg's nomination applauded his being president of the National Honors Society and the National English Honors Society, and his organizing of peer tutoring sessions for the high school and middle school programs.

Next week's poll

Local school administrators have nominated students who have shown outstanding academic and school achievements for the next round of Student of the Week voting.

Our second poll will publish on Monday, Jan. 29, with a new list of nominees. Voting will be open through noon, Thursday, Feb. 1, on our website.

We will announce the winner at heraldmailmedia.com on Friday, Feb. 2. and in the Herald-Mail on Sunday, Feb. 4.

A look at the other nominees for the Herald-Mail Student of the Week

Madison Hanes, North Hagerstown High School: Despite starting her high school career from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Madison has excelled academically. She boasts a 4.54 GPA and ranks first in her class, an impressive feat while taking on rigorous coursework in the International Baccalaureate Program. She is active with her school, participating in the IB Council, Calculus Club, Mock United Nations, two-year member of the National Honors Society and a member of the Forensic Club. Her pride and joy is in her dance, spending over 12 hours a week in technique class. She also teaches younger students in dance, a vital contribution to the community.

Brooklyn McCusker, Hancock Middle Senior High School: Brooklyn, a sophomore, stands out for her remarkable achievements in academics and her unwavering commitment to excellence. What truly sets Brooklyn apart is not only her academic and athletic achievements but also her drive to learn, excel, and reach ambitious goals. In addition to her individual accomplishments, Brooklyn is also dedicated to giving back to the community.

Dominic Runfola, South Hagerstown High School: Dominic is the president of South High's Student Government, as well as a member of the tennis team and the Academic Leadership Academy. Dominic is highly involved in serving the school and community.

Sofia Sadelson, Heritage Academy: Sofia is a senior and will finish at the top of her class with a GPA above a 4.0. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is a well-rounded student.  She has taken college-level courses and has chosen to take the more challenging classes. She is active in school activities such as worship team, FCA, and soccer. She also mentors younger students and sets an example to inspire them.

Brooke Sullivan, Smithsburg High School: Brooke is an absolute delight to have in class.  She is a hard worker, always tries her best and is the first person to volunteer to help others.  She is mature, respectful and puts in 100% effort in everything she does, both in and out of the classroom.

Ahayla Vemuri, Grace Academy: Ahayla, a 10th-grader, is a talented and hardworking student, and excels in her art class at Grace Academy. She meets each art assignment with creativity and hard work. Recently, she was accepted into the Wilson College High School Student Art Show, where her art was selected to be exhibited for two months at Wilson College. This was a juried show where there were more than 100 entries submitted, and only 37 were chosen.

Jason John Berg, Boonsboro High School: Jason, a senior, is a student in We the People, and helped lead the team on the Challenges facing the 21st Century to a State Championship. He is president of the National Honors Society and the National English Honors Society. In those roles. he organized peer tutoring sessions for the high school and middle school programs during school, after school and before school.
