Herald-Mail Student of the Week: See this week's winner

Crystal Santos Martinez has been chosen as The Herald-Mail Student of the Week.

Martinez, a junior at South Hagerstown High School, was one of eight nominees submitted by local high schools and received the most votes cast online.

Martinez's nomination applauded her leadership and helpfulness to classmates.

She goes above and beyond to help her classmates, according to the nomination for Crystal. She organizes events for the Spanish Club. Crystal leads her classmates by example. She represents students from every walk of life and welcomes them with open arms.

Local school administrators have nominated students who have shown outstanding academic and school achievements for the next round of Student of the Week voting.

Our fourth poll will publish on Monday, Feb. 12, with a new list of nominees. Voting will be open through noon, Thursday, Feb. 15, on our website.

We will announce the winner at heraldmailmedia.com on Friday, Feb. 16, and in The Herald- Mail on Sunday, Feb. 18.

A look at the other nominees for The Herald-Mail Student of the Week

Shayla Carpio Gonzalez, Williamsport High School: Shayla, a junior, has always been intrinsically motivated to work towards her fullest potential. She is currently balancing a full schedule of honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and Hagerstown Community College (HCC) dual-enrolled courses. As part of an apprenticeship program, she works part-time at Merkle. Even with a full load, Shayla has maintained honor roll status and is an active member of the HCC Upward Bound program.

Danielle Vaughn, Clear Spring High School: Danielle is a junior in our Agricultural Academy and is in the AP Capstone program.  She is enrolled in five AP classes, has completed the Ag Academy Animal Sciences pathway, and is working on the Ag Academy Environmental Sciences pathway.  Danielle also represented Clear Spring High and Maryland at the National FFA Convention this fall.

Amarion Longfellow, Boyd J. Michael III Technical High School: The junior earns straight A's. Amarion never causes an issue in classes or school and is extremely pleasant to be around. She is one of the quiet kids that goes overlooked most of the time, but should be acknowledged.

Nathan Satryano, Smithsburg High School: A junior, Nathan is polite and a tremendous student and person. He helps others during class with any questions they may have and is eager to help in the shop on his lunch period or free time.

Aleisha Rae Terry, Heritage Academy: Aleisha, a sophomore, excels academically and always comes to class with a smile and ready to work. She shows kindness to other students and is willing to help in any way needed. Aleisha pays close attention and is always willing to communicate her understanding of a subject to classmates. She shares her notes when others are absent and other students seek to review material with her.

Bekim Bushati, Boonsboro High School: The freshman has played lacrosse for the Boonsboro Area Athletic Association for four years. Plays ice hockey for the Hagerstown Hammerheads. Enrolled in AP course. Currently, a Distinguished Honor Roll student.

Abigail Chappell, St. Maria Goretti High School: Abby is a senior who has been a role model student throughout her four years at Goretti. She made the distinguished honor roll every semester, earning a 4.19 GPA. Abby is senior class president and a member of the National Honor Society. Through the National Honor Society at Goretti, she is a volunteer tutor for her peers. She also volunteers as a water quality and stream monitor for the Red Run Stream with The Institute in Waynesboro, Pa.
