Here's your 2023 guide to 50+ food trucks operating in Sioux Falls this summer

Another sign of summer is upon us: Food trucks are back.

Whether it's barbecue, tacos, burgers, or yes, even waffles, there are dozens of options across a variety of food categories for Sioux Falls residents and visitors to enjoy.

The Argus Leader compiled a list of more than 50 food trucks based in and around the city, operating this summer season. Our list includes several food trucks working streetside as well as a list of regular food truck gatherings in the Sioux Falls area, including locatoins like Golf Addiction in western Sioux Falls.

605 Barbecue Co.

What's on the menu: Find some authentic barbecue on this food truck complete with ribs, beef brisket, smoked pulled pork chopped chicken and its signature loaded pork mac & cheese.

Frequent locations, events: 605 Summer Classic and other local and private events as well as BBQ competitions in the area

Backyard BBQ

What's on the menu: Classic American BBQ with the Backyard Grill's signature dry rub St. Louis-style pork ribs and fresh-squeezed lemonade, beef brisket, pulled pork, smoke chicken. Sides include molasses baked beans, cornbread, coleslaw, mac and cheese, potato salad, kettle chips.

Frequent locations, events: Customers can find the Backyard BBQ at the Levitt Shell, Golf Addiction Tuesdays and at DTSF, as well as to other small town celebrations. Their other food truck, Ollie’s, is run out of the same place but will feature different food.

Berkes BBQ

What's on the menu: American BBQ with a range of BBQ sauces along with sweet BBQ beans, cheesy hash browns, brisket, pulled pork and chicken sandwiches and more.

Season start: Open year-round

Frequent locations, events: Tractor Supply in northern Sioux Falls is the food truck's home base, and they'll be there every Thursday. Other locations vary but include places like Furniture Mart USA, Sioux Falls MEPS and Avera.

Big Poppa's Food Truck

What's on the menu: This new food truck, started by the owner of the former Blue 42 sports grill in Hartford, will feature typical American food like burgers, chislic, BBQ, chicken wings, brisket, and beer cheese philly streak.

Season start: mid-May

Frequent locations, events: Big Poppa's will be mostly cater for the EMS staff in Sioux Falls, which owner Tony Axtell is a part of, and primarily be located downtown. But the food truck will also be at small community events and other local businesses for lunch throughout the summer. Customers should follow online for the schedule.

Oreo waffles are just one item on the menu at Black Iron Waffles food trailer. They can be made with either chocolate or vanilla waffles and then topped with pudding or whipped cream and Oreo cookies.

Black Iron Waffles

What's on the menu: Waffles. That's it. OK, maybe that's technically correct, but Black Iron Waffles serves a variety of waffle creations on their traditional Belgian-style or bubble-style waffles. Toppings range from Oreos and Nutella to bacon and Havarti cheese to cornbread chili to lemon with lemon drizzle.

What's new: Pepperoni pizza and cherry cheesecake waffles are the newest menu items. Owner Autumn Brockevelt also started a the East River Foodie and Truckie Passport, which is like a punch card and coupon book rolled into one. There are a handful of other food trucks involved in the passport.

Boki Gelato

What's on the menu: Gelato and European street food including gyro burgers and giant curly fries, steak plates, lemonade.

Season start: Cinco de mayo

Frequent locations, events: Boki Gelato has a storefront location in the Jones421 building and a location at the Empire Mall, but customers can find the food truck at nearly every fair or festival in southeastern South Dakota, including the Brookings Arts Festival, the Sioux Empire State Fair, Riverfest and Levitt at the Falls. It's also available for catering.

Breaking Burrito

What's on the menu: Burritos, quesadillas, tacos, nachos, flautas, tortas and fries. There's also an ever-changing burrito menu every two weeks, like Hawaiian, California, carnitas.

What's new: Possibly birra tacos. The owner is also working on a new unique food truck concept he plans to announce later this summer.

Buffalo Gal Concessions

What's on the menu: A lot of buffalo, like their super buffalo nachos and buffalo taco salad, will be on the menu as well as summer classics like brats, corn dogs, breakfast links, popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones and smoothies.

Central Dakota Perk

What's on the menu: Phillys, quesadillas, nachos, burgers and wraps are the main five food items. Sides include cheesy hashbrowns, hashbrowns chips, and salad. The food truck also serves all of the coffee shop's coffee drinks as well as Italian soda and lotus soda

Frequent locations, events: Hospitals, schools, Amazon on Thursday, Sanford Center on Wednesdays and at the home base location in Friday at 306 E. 1st Street in Tea. Fireworks event, Brandon food show, Harrisburg expo, teapot days, Brandon city-wide days, tea athletic complex. The coffee-only trailer is also available for events.

What's on the menu: ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, burgers, brats, hot dogs, homemade potatoes salad and baked beans as well as Chef Courtney's homemade BBQ sauce.

Frequent locations, events: Chef Courtney's Catering will often be downtown Sioux Falls and at the farmer's market in Brandon in addition to different locations around both towns.

Curbside Delights

What's on the menu: Curbside Delights is back this year after the owner had planned to close and sold the original truck. Pizza will be the star this time around in this Italian-concept food truck with options like cheese, philly steak and beef taco pizza. The menu will also serve dessert pizza, hot subs and pasta while still bringing back favorites like taco in a bowl. Gluten free pizza, subs and chislic will also be available.

What's on the menu: Shaved ice and rolled ice cream. Snow shakes, Italian sodas and dole whips are also on the menu.

What's new: Italian soda with Red Bull and limited-time menu items like ice cream nachos

Frequent locations, events: Polar Bites, once called Sub Zero Desserts, will be open at its 41st Street location all summer and year round at the new 401 E. 8th Street. The mobile food truck will make appearances at Food Truck Alley in Brandon, Teapot Days and other events.

What's on the menu: Espinoza's in Canton features street tacos, burritos, breakfast burritos , quesadillas and tortas.

What's on the menu: Jokers tacos are the signature menu item at FadeAways, and they come with smoked pork or ground beef and sweet chili coleslaw. The menu also features items like chicken sandwiches, mac & cheese, a smokehouse burger and loaded fries

Fat Kid Filly's

What's on the menu: Specializes in Philly cheesesteaks, filyritos, nachos, burgers, walking, and other American grill foods

What's new: Fat kid Filly's new truck has a deep fryer, so the menu will feature philly-covered fries, churros and other desserts. And along with he reaper challenge, customers can take part in the Devil's Deal where there try to eat about 12 pounds of food in a little over an hour.

Frequent locations, events: J&L Harley Davidson's for lunches, Bike Nights at J&L Harley Davidson, Critters, Tuesdays at Golf Addiction, Denny Sanford, Rock 'N' Rumble in Yankton, and other locations with popups in Salem.

Get'Cha Coffee

What's on the menu: loaded energy drinks, iced lattes, cold brews, blended espresso drinks, smoothies, Pretty much any kind of espresso drinks. There are also a lot of keto-friendly and sugar-free options. Get-Cha Coffee will also have pastries and cookies and possibly breakfast sandwiches sometime in the future.

Frequent locations, events: The owners of Get'Cha Coffee plan to take the cart to a lot of apartment complexes around Sioux Falls as well as other businesses and places like downtown.

What's on the menu: The all American fare will leave you with a "food hangover" with menu items like burgers, fries, hot dogs, lamb chislic and chili cheese fries.

What's new: Philly cheesesteaks and cheese curds are new on the menu this year.

What's on the menu: Lamb chislic is the feature item on this food truck. The menu also includes deep-fried tater tots with meat and BBQ sauce, hamburgers, pot roast sandwiches, chicken strips, hot dogs and cheese curds, depending on the event.

What's new: Baby back ribs are on the menu this year.

What's on the menu: Mediterranean food, including shawarmas, rice platters, gyros and falafels. A lot of the options are vegetarian, vegan and/or gluten-free.

Frequent locations, events: Food Truck Tuesdays at Golf Addiction and Levitt at the Falls. Hunny & Bunny mostly does catering and set lunches for businesses and weddings.

KK & Sons Lao & Thai Food

What's on the menu: Street food from Laos, Thailand and Vietnam like pork jerky with sticky rice and spicy sauce, drunken noodles and the truck's famous fried chicken.

What's new: Bringing back funnel cakes and churro style funnel cakes. There will also be specials, such as smoked blackened fish tacos, every other week for Food Truck Fridays.

What's on the menu: Corn tortilla tacos with signature spicy sauce, pork burritos and beef burritos. Tortas, or Mexican sandwiches, and carnitas plates are on the menu as well. Meat choices include chorizo, lengua, cabeza and marinated pork. Tamales and carnitas by the pound will be sold on special days.

What's on the menu: You can find all-day breakfast on this new food truck, the former Chizlickers. The menu includes breakfast burritos and sandwiches as well as biscuits and gravy. Fleischkuekle, which is a deep-friend German turnover, will also be a special menu item offered once a week.

What's on the menu: This new food truck specializes in traditional Taiwansese bubble tea and baked good. In addition to various flavors of boba, there will also be cupcakes, cheesecake cups and edible cookie dough on the menu.

What's on the menu: Street Bite is another new food truck in town, one that features eastern-inspired street chicken over rice, the Dakota Dip beef sandwich with au jus and a pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw. The menu also includes frozen cocoa, banana bread and cookies.

Food truck events

Food Truck Tuesday at Golf Addiction: Food Truck Tuesday runs from May 10 through Sept. 13, all starting at 5 p.m. at 5301 W. 57th St. until 9 p.m. The line up of food trucks will change throughout the season and can be viewed on Facebook.

Bike Nights at J&L Harley Davidson: The J&L Harley Davidson Friday night bike nights kick off on May 18 from 6-10 p.m. and continues as a monthly event through the summer until Sept. 7.

Levitt at the Falls: This free summer concert series runs every Thursday through Saturday from June 2 to September 9 this year. Concerts start at 7 p.m. and food trucks typically set up around 6:30 p.m. at the Levitt Shell in downtown Sioux Falls.

Fridays on the Plaza: Food trucks and musical performances at the weekly event at the 12th Street Plaza outside the Dakota News Now building from May 27 through Sept. 9. The event runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Brandon Farmer's Market: Starting May 7 there will be food trucks at the farmer's market in Brandon from 5-9 p.m. on Saturdays.

Food Truck Monday at Dells Auto: Three trucks every week, serving from 4:30 p.m. until the food runs out. It's up and running through September this year. Participating food trucks can be seen on the business's Facebook page.
