Here's how to attend Corpus Christi ISD's drug education symposium

Corpus Christi ISD is hosting a parent symposium focused on drug education Saturday.

The Helping Others through Prevention and Education symposium is aimed at CCISD families, as well as community members in neighboring districts and across the Coastal Bend.

"We recognize drug abuse impacts the community and that's why we're opening it up to anybody," chief instructional support officer Jennifer Arismendi said. "It's about the greater good of making sure adults are aware and know the signs to look for in friends, family or loved ones who may be using drugs or other types of unhealthy habits and what's available and what they can do to intervene."

The event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Del Mar College FEMA Dome at 4244 Old Brownsville Road and will continue until 1:30 p.m. The district shared information about the event with area school districts, as well as the juvenile justice system.

The keynote speaker will be life coach and Elevated Lifestyle Academy founder Neal Williams. Other speakers throughout the day will focus on the dangers of vaping, opioid prevention, signs of substance abuse, strategies for speaking to children about drugs and self-care strategies for parents and guardians.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to connect with community agencies focused on substance abuse prevention and treatment and mental health services.

Online registration for the event, which will feature breakfast, is available at https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeJo82yFiv3ZxM1F11yChaKIIxV97htDe3cq9asEhAiHuKnlg/viewform.

The event is part of a series. In May, another HOPE Symposium will focus on mental health and mental wellbeing.

"It will cover mental health, mental wellness, self-care and how to maybe bring joy and happiness into one's life -- things you can do to take care of yourself, so that you have a good, healthy overall wellbeing so that you can take care of your children and your loved ones," Arismendi said.
