There’s a topic I’d really rather avoid, but we have to talk about it eventually: At some point in the future, Grey’s Anatomy is going to end and we will all see Meredith Grey scrub in for the very last time. As members of the main cast drop like flies (bye, Justin Chambers) the question isn’t if but when Grey’s Anatomy will end.

Bad news, friends: It seems like it’s going to happen sooner rather than later.

First, the positives. Ellen Pompeo is contracted through 2021 and season 17 is premiering this week, so this guarantees us at least one more season. However, she’s said (without really saying it) that it could be the very last season…and as Shonda Rhimes has said in the past, when Ellen is out, everybody’s out. You can’t have Grey’s Anatomy without Meredith Grey, after all.

In a recent interview with Variety, Ellen explained that this season might be challenging enough, with all the COVID-19 precautions, that it might end up being the final one. “We don’t know when the show is really ending yet. But the truth is, this year could be it,” she said. “I mean, this is the last year of my contract right now. I don’t know that this is the last year? But it very well could be.”

This definitely isn’t the first time she’s hinted about this season being the end. In fact, last September, Ellen refused to tell James Corden if the final season is about to be upon us…and on top of that, she even shared that she has an idea for how it could all end, and it involves bringing back the old cast members.

“That would be the most amazing day,” she shared, adding that it would be a bit of a challenge because “some of them were killed on the show.” Well, yeah.

We can end this thing however you want, Ellen. Except it obviously has to involve Meredith getting Alzheimer’s, Zola becoming a doctor who’s there for her the way that Meredith was there for Ellis, and her reuniting with Derek, right? RIGHT?

But regardless of any plans for the end, it seems like the cast is getting ready to move on. Now that Justin has dipped out, that leaves only three of the original doctors on the show: Meredith, Bailey, and Webber. Things certainly seem to be winding down, and as hard as it is to think of saying goodbye to a show that has literally seen me through college, becoming an adult, and all my important life moments, the time might have come.

And even without season 18, Grey’s fans will still have hundreds of episodes to watch and we can all relive the good times—you know, those years when McDreamy was still alive and Cristina Yang still lived in the United States.
