Here's your chance to nominate someone for Terrebonne's Most Useful Citizen award

Know a volunteer who has gone above and beyond the norm to make Terrebonne Parish a better place? Nominate him or her for The Courier’s 2023 Terrebonne’s Most Useful Citizen Award.

The newspaper has given the award every year since 1946 to recognize Terrebonne residents who put in extraordinary time, talent and effort to improve their community.

The Courier solicits the nominations, and an anonymous panel of judges chooses the award recipient. Judges are chosen for their own involvement in activities to enhance life in Terrebonne, and none are employed by or affiliated with The Courier.

Last year's award went to Jonathan Foret for his years of involvement in the fight to save the parish's eroding wetlands and numerous other community efforts.

To nominate someone, write a letter that describes the person’s activities and accomplishments. Include the nominee’s name, address, occupation and employer along with your name, address and phone number. Email nominations to ccampo@gannett.com by noon Jan. 20.

Organizers said the award presents a great opportunity to nominate someone whose volunteer efforts have helped people in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida or during the COVID-19 pandemic. But residents are encouraged to nominate anyone who has made an impact, especially those with a lifetime of volunteer work that has helped improve lives in Terrebonne.

Members of every church, school, nonprofit or other community group can probably think of someone who deserves this high-profile recognition.

The award is also open to people who may have been nominated in previous years. Individuals or groups may update the nominations and resubmit them with any new activities they want judges to consider.

The award will be presented during the Houma-Terrebonne Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet, scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Jan. 30 at the Barry Bonvillain Civic Center. Reserved seating and sponsorships may be purchased by calling the chamber office at 876-5600.
