Here's how Classic Cars on Main Street will come back Sunday in Brighton

The Brighton Kiwanis Classic Cars on Main Street event will return this Sunday, July 31.
The Brighton Kiwanis Classic Cars on Main Street event will return this Sunday, July 31.

Classic Cars on Main Street will return Sunday with new safety rules in place, organizers say.

The Brighton Kiwanis created a new plan with the Brighton police, Department of Public Works and Brighton Area Fire Authority to bring back the car show with new precautions.

Kiwanis Concert Chairperson Dennis Dimoff said he's excited for Sunday: "The people want it back . . . it's great it's coming back."

The show was canceled two weeks ago, citing safety concerns and a lack of volunteers.

Brighton Police Sgt. Brent Pirochta said they've been working with the group to come up with a safety plan.

"We had a meeting yesterday and we felt that those needs were met," he said. "We think it's a great event for our community and look forward seeing how it goes from here."

Now, the show will return with a limit on the number of cars that can participate.

The show is limited to the first 80 cars, and drivers will be given wristbands and lined up in the Brighton Educational Community Center (BECC) parking lot.

Then, the cars will be escorted to Main Street, in a barricaded area between West Street and First Street.

If the first week goes smoothly, Dimoff said the show could expand by another 30 cars on Main Street to Grand River.

Another safety precaution is making sure there are at least 12 volunteers for each show. The volunteers need to be there 4:30 to 8:15 p.m. Interested volunteers can email their name and phone number to ClassicCarsOnMain@Gmail.com.

Other safety requirements for the show include:

  • All cars must register for the event. People can register before the event or once they arrive. Registration will be signed by the owner of the car and kept on file by the Brighton Kiwanis. The registration form will be available on the Kiwanis website: BrightonKiwanis.com.

  • All cars must start at the BECC Building parking lot, located at 125 S. Church St. in Brighton.

  • Cars can enter the closed area of Main Street between 5 and 5:45 p.m., or until all of the spots are filled. Volunteers will direct parking.

  • Cars parked on Main Street are required to park in legal parking spots, which will be enforced by local authorities

  • Cars are required to remain in their spots until 8 p.m.

  • Cars are not allowed to do engine starts or burnouts, because it could interrupt the concerts on Sunday nights and could cause cars to lose control.

  • When it's time for cars to exit the show, cars east of the restaurant Ciao Amici will exit the show at West Street and cars west of Ciao Amici will exit at Hyne Street.

  • Cars that do not follow the rules will be emailed and prohibited from participating in future shows.
