N.C. House and Senate committee assignments for the 2023-2024 session were announced last week and the General Assembly returned to work this week.

Rep. Phil Shepard (R-Onslow) has been appointed to serve on six committees, according to a recent news release from his office. Shepard will sit as chair on the Appropriations Transportation committee, as chair on the Transportation committee and as vice chair on the Appropriations committee.

He will also sit on the Commerce, Education K-12 and Health committees.

“I appreciate the speaker appointing me to serve on these important committees, including as a chair for our transportation policy and funding committees,” Shepard said in the release. “I look forward to working with my colleagues and working to enhance transportation, education and health care in our great state."

Speaker Tim Moore, who was responsible for appointment decisions, said in the release that as the long session gets underway, he looks forward to working with this bipartisan group of leaders to ensure an even stronger N.C.

“We have a strong group of committee chairs this session, and I am confident that they will continue to propel our state forward and to the top of the pack," Moore added.

According to his office, Rep. George Cleveland (R-Onslow) will sit on standing committees Appropriations Full, Appropriations Gen. Gov. as co-chair, Marine Resources and Aquaculture as chair, Transportation as vice chair and Military and Veterans Affairs as vice chair.

He will also sit on the Insurance and Oversight Reform committees.

In addition, Cleveland will also be co-chair on the non-standing JLOC (Joint Legislative Oversight Committee) Gen. Gov.

Committees will meet at the direction of the committee chairs to discuss legislation that is relevant to the specific policy area, the release explained. Members of the committee will be able to debate bills heard in the committee, propose changes to the bill’s language and vote on whether the bill should advance.

Senator Michael Lazzara has also received his committee assignments.

According to his office, Lazzara will sit as co-chair on the Appropriations Department of Transportation committee and as co-chair on the Transportation committee.

He will also be a member on the Education and Higher Education committee, Finance committee, Judiciary committee and State and Local Governments committee.
