Though graduation is approaching and students will soon be out of school for the summer, there are still plenty of opportunities to get involved at Stockton Unified in May.

Subcommittee meetings have returned to Stockton Unified after an extended absence. Board President AngelAnn Flores said the meetings are an important opportunity for the public to have input and interact with board members and administrators — a more open format than a traditional board meeting.

“There is opportunity to listen, discuss and respond,” Flores told The Record. “That’s the type of community partnership that’s vital to the work that we are doing at the district.”

From budget discussions to conversations about equity, Flores said there are all kinds of options for community members to get involved in moving the district forward.

“We need to hear from the community, what is equitable to you, in your community, for your child?” Flores said. “Every committee is scheduled with intention, uplifting all the work that is necessary to continue moving our district forward. We can’t do that alone.”

Superintendent search

The district plans to reschedule the April 28 superintendent search subcommittee meeting that was canceled, Flores said. She also hopes to add an additional opportunity for community input on Stockton Unified’s next superintendent in May, with dates to be determined.

“We feel we don’t have enough community input yet,” Flores said. “We want to ensure that we are having that transparency with our community and giving them as many opportunities as possible.”

The board had originally fast-tracked the superintendent search to make a hire by the end of May. Flores said meeting that timeline will depend on the final candidates and scheduling.
