CORRECTION: A previous version of this story identified the state representative race for District 65 as appearing on Monroe County's ballot. Due to recent redistricting, the district no longer includes Monroe County. Also, major party candidates running for U.S. representative do not have to collect a required amount of signatures to appear on the ballot.

This year, Monroe County residents will witness some crowded primary races, such as those for Congress and the Indiana House as well as sheriff and judge.

The following candidates have officially filed paperwork to run for their party's nomination to local, state and national offices in the upcoming Democratic and Republican primary elections. The deadline to file for candidacy was noon Monday.

Before the general election in November, candidates in the two main parties who are seeking these offices must first make it through the May 3 primaries.

In addition, three statewide offices will be on the fall ballot: secretary of state, state treasurer and state auditor. In these cases, candidates for the general election are selected by a political party in a state convention rather than facing off in a primary, according to state law.

Three seats on the Monroe County Community School Corp. board and two on the Richland-Bean Blossom Community School Corp. board will also be on the November Monroe County ballots. Filing for those nonpartisan positions will begin July 27.

Here's the list of the candidates who have filed to appear on Monroe County's primary ballots in May. (D) indicates Democrat, (R) Republican and (I) is for incumbent.

Another race

In a non-Monroe County race of local interest, Republican Jeff Ellington, who currently represents part of Monroe County in the state Legislature as the District 62 representative, has filed to run for state representative in the newly redrawn District 45, which includes all of Greene and Sullivan counties and portions of a few others. Bruce Borders, the current District 45 representative and also a Republican, has filed for reelection.
