Here's how to get a free check-up for your child at AnMed's annual 'Teddy Bear Clinic'

AnMed will hold its annual Teddy Bear Clinic designed to help young patients conquer their fears of doctor visits and medical procedures on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9-11 a.m. at the Anderson Institute of Technology at 315 Pearman Dairy Road.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the annual event to be postponed in 2020, 2021 and 2022. But it's back this year, and kids ages 4 to 10 are invited to bring their favorite stuffed animals or borrow one from the on-site clinic for an interactive "check-up."

The event is free and does not require registration, though children who take part must be accompanied by an adult.

AnMed said the "check-up process" will be fun, safe, and informative, with procedures and screenings conducted by medical professionals.

Dr. Kyle Torni says, "The Teddy Bear Clinic is an excellent way for children to experience a doctor's visit in a non-threatening environment."

“By examining their teddy, we are able to conduct a doctor’s visit, lab draw or patient encounter in a way that allows the child to see the process without the anxiety of being the patient themselves. We can all understand being scared to go to the doctor's for fear of pokes or shots. We hope that this type of experience will empower children and their families to be advocates for their own health.”

Parents and children will be given an up-close look at what goes into keeping South Carolina safe and healthy, from police and fire personnel to emergency medical services, and helicopter transport service.
