Here's what Illinoisans need to know about registering to vote and casting early ballots

Two weeks remain until Election Day 2022 when voters will cast ballots in local, state, and congressional races which could shake up majorities in Springfield and Washington.

Already Illinois voters are early voting but there also are other voting options whether in-person, vote-by-mail, or going to the polls on Election Day.

How do I register to vote?

For the next two weeks, voters can register in person through Election Day. Voters in Sangamon County can register or update their address at the county election office at 200 S. 9th St., Room 105.

Voters need to bring two forms of identification including one that shows a voter's name and current address. The other option is a varied list that includes documents such as a driver's license, credit card, or birth certificate.

Online voter registration is closed.

Can I still vote by mail?

Time still remains for voters wishing to vote by mail, but it is running out fast. Thursday, Nov. 3 is the last day to request an application, which can be done by visiting, emailing a printed application, or calling the election office at 217-753-8683.

This process is the same for those who will not be in the country on Election Day.

Expanded early voting opportunities

The last two weekends in Springfield, voters have had an opportunity to vote on Saturday although only between 9 a.m. and noon. Sunday, Oct. 30 voting hours will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., while Oct. 31 through Nov. 4 has open hours from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Also that week, the student union building at the University of Illinois-Springfield will serve as a temporary early voting location. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the location will be open only to those who live in voting precincts 14, 37, 92, 93, 99, and Woodside 02.

Voters can find their polling location by searching the Illinois State Board of Elections website and click the "Registration/Polling Place Lookup" tab. By entering a current address, voters will find where they need to report to on Election Day.
