Here's all you need to know about Northern State's homecoming parade on Saturday

Come Saturday morning, Aberdeen's Main Street will be lined with people ready to check out floats, grab candy and goodies, listen to marching bands and, yes, see a few political candidates.

It's homecoming week at Northern State University, and the parade starts at 9 a.m. with more than 130 entries signed up. The university touts the parade as the largest in the region, and this year's will feature 19 high school and middle school marching bands, as well as the Northern State University Marching Wolves, who will, as usual, be the first band in the lineup.

The other marching bands entered are from Aberdeen Central, Britton-Hecla, Deuel, Edmunds Central, Eureka, Groton, Holgate/Simmons middle schools, Hoven, Ipswich, Leola, Miller, Mobridge-Pollock, Northwestern, Redfield, Roncalli, Sully Buttes, Warner, Watertown and Webster.

Northern State University plans expanded beer sales at football games this season

The parade starts at the intersection of North Main Street and Eight Avenue North and continues south on Main Street to 12th Avenue South.

Justin Fraase, Northern State vice president of enrollment, communications and marketing, said the parade will be broadcast live on channel 12 for Midco and NVC cable subscribers. It will also be available on the NSUtv YouTube channel and on Northern State Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/northernstateu.

This year's them, which was voted on by the students, is "Wolves on Broadway."

Other homecoming events also planned this week

Coronation will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Krikac Auditorium. It will be followed by the bonfire bash and pep rally in the Barnett Center parking lot.

The football game against Winona State begins at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Dacotah Bank Stadium on campus.

Other Northern State athletic teams also have homecoming contests this week.

Friday

  • Women's swimming against Minnesota State, Moorhead at 2 p.m. at the Aberdeen Family YMCA.

  • Women's soccer against the University of Sioux Falls at 6 p.m. at athletic and recreation fields.

  • Women's volleyball against Wayne State at 6 p.m. at the Barnett Center.

Saturday

  • Women's volleyball against Augustana University at 6 p.m. at the Barnett Center

Sunday

  • Women's soccer against Southwest Minnesota State at 1 p.m. at the athletic and recreation fields.

Karen and Roger Youngman are 2022 parade marshals

Karen and Roger Youngman are this year’s parade marshals.

Roger Youngman, who died in August, is being recognized as a distinguished alumnus by the Northern State University Foundation at its hall of fame and distinguished alumni banquet.

A 1963 graduate, Youngman was a founding member of the International Chapter of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, serving as president in 1983 and 1984. He retired from the U.S. Department of Defense in 2000 and from the Conde School District in 2006. He played football for the Wolves while he was a student.

Temperature could be cool when parade begins

It could be cool Saturday morning as the parade gets going. The temperature is supposed to dip below freezing Friday night, according to the National Weather Service.

But the afternoon should be mild and just about perfect for football with a projected high of around 60, if the forecast holds.
