Here's a list of Father's Day gifts for the outdoorsman you know

With Father’s Day quickly approaching on June 19, it’s time to make sure the outdoorsmen in your life get something they will appreciate.

If dad and grandpa like hunting, fishing, camping and hiking, you have endless possibilities when it comes to shopping.

There are many items that sportsmen need to buy on a regular basis.

For example, if he likes hunting, you may want to help him get his hunting license for the new year, which starts July 1. Just keep in mind if your hunter is 65 or older he might already have a lifetime senior license.

A gift that might be difficult to find, but will be appreciated, is shotgun shells or rifle cartridges for his favorite deer rifle. Sports shops are starting to get more ammo supplies in, but the supply shortages stemming back more than a year from the coronavirus pandemic are still a problem.

Get one that fits:Not all kayaks are created the same

If you are not sure what you want to buy or are looking for something different, go to your locally owned sporting goods stores. Their employees are people who also enjoy the outdoors and will be able to give you the right advice.

One Pennsylvania store I discovered is Dunkelberger’s Sports Outfitters in Stroudsburg. The business started in 1972 and now has a complete line of everything related to outdoors recreation. About 10 years ago, they opened a second store in Brodheadsville.

“The last two years, with the pandemic … people are getting out in nature and finding out how much fun being outside hiking, camping, fishing, hunting and all that is to do. It’s a been a win-win. People are getting outside and being with nature. It’s just good for the soul,” Michael Fritz, vice president at Dunkelberger’s, said in a telephone interview.

Get a centerpin:Stay in your target fishing zone longer with a centerpin reel

He said some gifts outdoor people buy on a continual basis include targets for shooting, lures and baits for fishing, and hikers need walking sticks, gloves, boots and socks.

He also suggested rainwear and insulated clothing to help your outdoorsman stay comfortable in changing weather conditions.

“There’s a plethora of things you can get for someone that involves the outdoors,” Fritz said.

For those who enjoy spending time in the water or just in the sun, there are several lines of  lightweight clothing that provide protection from the sun, without being bulky. “They are not as hot as you think they would be,” he said about long-sleeve shirt options that wick moisture away from your skin.

He said the clothing also dries quickly if you get it wet.

Visit a park for Father's Day:A look at Gifford Pinchot State Park

If you like being out on the water, he said, “Kayaking has been pretty popular the last two years where you can get out … go fishing and paddle around lakes and rivers. It’s pretty tranquil. It’s nice to be out on the water.”

Another popular gift idea is Yeti mugs and coolers. He said they keep your beverages colder than traditional similar items. “You can have ice water in the morning and still have ice water after 4 o’clock in the afternoon. They’re a great product,” Fritz said about the drink ware.

Father’s Day is about showing appreciation and spending time together as a family. Another gift idea is to create an experience. Get a gift certificate to shoot sporting clays at a local range, plan a fishing trip or rent kayaks for your family at your local state park.

I’m hoping these ideas will help you find the right idea to make the upcoming holiday one he will always remember.
