Here's how LSU quarterback Myles Brennan broke his non-throwing arm on a fishing trip

LAFAYETTE, La. — LSU quarterback Myles Brennan was originally expected to miss most or all of the 2021 season after breaking his left, non-throwing arm on a fishing trip Sunday, his father Owen Brennan told WWL Radio in New Orleans on Wednesday.

"He's got to be at the point where he can take a hit and full contact in SEC football," Brennan said. "In initial conversations, they said three months before that would happen."

After surgery by LSU doctors on Tuesday in Baton Rouge, though, that forecast changed.

"When they saw what they were able to do and how much they were able to secure the bone with plates and screws and knowing his healing process, they would not be surprised if he was ready to go before that," Brennan said.

Brennan said he is hopeful his son could be ready by the Mississippi State game on Sept. 25 on the road or on Oct. 2 for Auburn at home.Sophomore Max Johnson, who entered spring drills at No. 1, has been named the starter.

"They said they're going to have Myles throwing in two weeks and take it day-to-day from there," Brennan said. "They're going to get him to physical therapy on Friday and start moving his left arm."

Brennan explained how his son broke his humerus bone, which extends from the shoulder to the elbow, at Grand Isle, south of Louisiana.

"The entire team had a week off before they report to fall camp, and as a lot of people know, Myles is a huge fisherman," he said. "He was going fishing one last opportunity before heading into camp, and loading up to go out. He had all the gear in his hands and everything, and literally his flip-flops caught a loose board on the dock. He tripped. He wasn’t able to catch himself with his hands full. He fell on his left arm and broke his humerus bone."

The quarterback at first thought he just bruised his arm, said his father, who was not on the trip.

"He said, ‘I’m not about to go home. I’m going fishing.’ He fought through it," Brennan said. "And the next morning, he woke up and realized it was a little bit more than a bruise and called us. He drove himself to Baton Rouge from Grand Isle and ended up having a compound fracture of the humerus bone. He’s a lot tougher than I am."

Asked where on the arm the break happened, Brennan said, "Right smack in the middle, and it's a compound fracture. I mean if you saw the X-rays, it would turn your stomach. The doctors at LSU did an incredible job. They set it. He has a metal plate holding the bone together. He's got some screws in there. The scar tissue is going to heal over it. And thank goodness, it's his left arm."

Brennan won LSU's starting job last season and started the first three games before injuring his abdomen in a collision at Missouri and missing the rest of the season. Should he not return soon enough or not beat out Johnson upon his return, Brennan does have the option of returning to LSU as a senior in 2022 because of COVID-19 eligibility waivers last year. He has already spoken to LSU coach Ed Orgeron about that possibility.

His father was asked if Brennan had any plans to transfer.

"None whatsoever," he said. "Very first thing he said when he talked to Coach Orgeron was, 'How much eligibility do I have if it is the worst-case scenario?' He was already thinking that."

Brennan, who backed up Danny Etling in 2017 and Joe Burrow in 2018 and '19, wants badly to be LSU's starting quarterback, his father said.

"I can assure you when the doctor blows the whistle and says he can play, there will be an extremely intense competition to see who the starting quarterback is," Brennan said.
