Here’s How Meghan Markle Honored Prince Philip’s Memory From Home

While Meghan Markle couldn't be in the U.K. to mourn the late Prince Philip in person, her presence was still felt at the service.

On April 17, the Duchess of Sussex paid homage to her grandfather-in-law by watching the funeral from home in California, per People. Although Markle, who is pregnant with her second child, was not cleared to travel to the U.K. by her physician, she was represented by her husband, Prince Harry.

Along with a handwritten note, Markle sent a custom-designed wreath to be laid at the service. The wreath was made by Willow Crossley, the same designer who worked on the couple's 2018 wedding reception as well as Archie's christening. Per the Sussexes' specific requests, the floral arrangement included Acanthus mollis (bear's breeches) to represent Prince Philip's Greek heritage, Eryngium (sea holly) to honor his service in the Royal Marines, and more flowers that symbolize gratitude, everlasting love, remembrance, and devotion.

Prince Philip's funeral marked Prince Harry and Prince William's first joint appearance since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved overseas to the United States. During the procession Prince Harry and Prince William were separated by their cousin Peter Phillips, the son of Princess Anne. This was not due to any personal rift but “a practical change rather than sending a signal.”

“This is a funeral and we are not going to be drawn into perceptions of drama,” a Buckingham Palace spokesman previously said in a statement, per People. “The arrangements have been agreed and represent Her Majesty's wishes.”

While Prince Harry was seen sitting apart from his older brother during the socially distanced funeral service at St. George's Chapel, the pair were spotted walking back from the event together, chatting one-on-one.

The Duke of Sussex returned to the U.K. on Sunday, April 11, and it is reported that he will visit for only one week. “He’s already really missing Meghan and Archie and has been FaceTiming them every day to check-in,” a source told Us Weekly. “He actually speaks to Meghan a few times a day because he worries [about] leaving her when she’s so far along in her pregnancy.”
