Here's how much MU students will pay for tuition starting fall semester 2023

The tuition University of Missouri students will pay in fall 2023 depends upon their area of study, which, in turn, should determine their future income.

The "differential" or "tiered" tuition has been in development for several years, said Ryan Rapp, University of Missouri System executive vice president for finance, during a Thursday special meeting of the UM System Board of Curators over Zoom.

The undergraduate tuition rate will be a flat rate for students taking 12 to 15 hours of credits and supplemental fees have been eliminated under the new model.

"We are going to have a rate of tuition based on a program of study," Rapp said.

It's meant to be easier for students to understand, without the surprise of added course fees, which students only found out about after enrollment, he said.

"The goal of this is how do we simplify the pricing to make it more predictable?" Rapp said.

The flat rate encourages students to take at least 15 hours per semester to graduate on time, he said.

The tuition tiers consider potential salary outcomes for areas of study, Rapp said.

In-state tier 1 tuition of MU students is $6,500 per semester. Majors in tier 1 include anthropology, English, religious studies, general studies and linguistics.

Tier 2 tuition at MU is $7,400 per semester. Those majors include physics, statistics, economics, film studies, animal sciences and journalism.

Tier 3 tuition is $8.300 for in-state students. Majors paying that rate include engineering nursing

MU tier 1 graduate students will pay $500 per credit hour; tier 2, $535; tier 3, $575; tier 4, $650. Tier 5 is based on the national job market and would vary from $575 to $1,400 per credit hour.

Tier 1 at the graduate level includes veterinary medicine and agriculture, food and natural sources, tier 2, medicine; tier 3, doctorates in business; tier 4, accounting; and tier 5, law. Graduate students don't have a flat rate, tuition.

Rapp's presentation included an example of a $6,740.68 for an undergraduate education major in fall 2022 for a student taking 15 hours. That included resident tuition of $5,037, a $235 information and technology fee, a $225 arts and science course fee, a $714, a $267.60 student activity fee, a $166.46 recreation center fee and a $95.12 student health fee.

In the fall, the student would pay $7,061, including $6,500 tuition, plus the student activity fee, recreation fee and student health fee.

Implementing a new model was a big lift, said board member Robin Wenneker

"This is so complicated to make a big change," Wenneker said.

The new model will be better for students, said MU chancellor and system President Mun Choi in a news release.

“We know how budgeting for college can be complicated, but when they attend a University of Missouri campus, they will be able to plan better knowing what their costs will be,” Choi said. “We already have the highest graduation rates among all public universities in Missouri and the new tuition structure will enable our students to complete their undergraduate degrees sooner, thereby reducing cost of attendance."

The meeting was the first for new curators Robert Fry, Jeanne Sinquefield and Robert Blitz.
