When you own a lifetime collection of your personal paintings, textile art, ceramic creations, photography, lithography and more, what do you when it is time to downsize and move to another state?

Former Freeport artist, Linda Hoch Auman, faced that dilemma when she and her husband Glenn moved to Florida to be near family. There was far too much to take with them.

Fortunately her friend, Kathleen Glaze, of Cedarville, offered to temporarily house nearly one hundred pieces of art which will now be offered for sale at Deer Ridge Ministries Retreat House on Saturday, June 18.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit Deer Ridge Ministries, a non-profit Christian ministry that provides the gift of Sabbath rest retreats for pastors, missionaries, and their spouses at no cost to them.

Much of Auman's work that will be on display was inspired by her travel, including a painting of Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy. Venice is also represented in her unusual rendering of St. Mark’s Basilica depicting its famous pigeons fluttering above Piazza San Marco. An inspirational composition of a symbolic white doves flying against a crimson background speaks of the Holy Spirit and Auman’s Christian faith.

There will also be textile pieces of richly colored abstract paintings of local architecture building's, including the old Stephenson County Courthouse, pretzel city drawings, birds, photography, ceramics and many multi media pieces, the exhibit provides something for every artistic taste and pocketbook.

She likes working in oil and mixed media but is drawn to water color with ink designs for added detail. She has painted murals, spun wool and woven banners for area churches, and her work can be found in local museums, the Forreston Library, Freeport High School, the Monroe Clinic, select area businesses and private collections.

A graduate of Northern Illinois University, she taught art and photography for 22 years at Christian Life School in Rockford, five years at Immanuel Lutheran School in Freeport, and for decades, she substituted at many area schools. She gave private art lessons in her home and also taught watercolor painting at Highland Community College.

The art sale will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Deer Ridge Retreat, 3085 W. Forest Road. For more information, call 815-238-2286.
