We don’t have Chris Harrison around to promise us the *most dramatic* season of The Bachelorette ever, but Michelle Young’s season is still living up to the franchise’s forever promise. On night one, Michelle trusted her instincts and sent home Ryan Fox (aka Ice Cream Truck Ryan, aka Red Flag Ryan), a guy who literally packed a playbook on how to win the show.

Hosts Tayshia Adams and Kailtyn Bristowe found folders full of notes on everything from getting screen time and a good edit to Michelle’s personal interests and likes in Ryan’s room and, naturally, told Michelle all about it. Michelle confronted Ryan, who was surprising chill about having the massive amounts of Bach research found in his room and acted like it was NBD. After looking through the playbook, however, Michelle firmly disagreed and sent Ryan packing, pre–rose ceremony.

This week, Ryan appeared on the Click Bait With Bachelor Nation podcast (hosted by Joe Amabile and Natasha Parker, along with guest host Tia Booth) to discuss the whole sitch and defend his red-flag-worthy move.

“It’s the biggest building season of the year ever, and so I had zero time in the world to do anything, working like, 60 hours a week,” Ryan, who works as an environmental consultant, explained according to People. “They gave me that short amount of time to get ready. By the time I’m getting my clothes and things [packed to go on the show], the only things that I asked my friend’s wife, my close friend—‘Hey, can you give me like, a summary of the show? Can you give me a summary of Michelle? Show me everything. Can you just put it in a little thing and give it to me? Because I’ve got too much going on.’”

Ryan went on to claim that a lot of what Michelle was reading on the show was actually his personal diary, rather than notes compiled by his friend's wife.

“I’m a big journaler,” he said. “I think it’s a big thing about being introspective, so one of the things they read is my self-devotionals, I guess, like my pros and cons list of myself. And that same list has a summary of every relationship. After every relationship, I’ll write a narrative of what good happened in that relationship, what bad happened in the relationship....I think that’s where the misunderstanding is, is that it’s literally my journal. What she’s reading is my personal journal. There [are] notes my friend gave me, and then she's reading my personal journal.”

Joe pointed out the obvious, telling Ryan that it sure seemed like he had ‘a lot of time on [his] hands,” but Ryan maintained that there was “nothing bad” in the notes he brought to the show.

Michelle *clearly* disagreed.
