Here's how Saline County high school baseball, softball and soccer teams did at regionals

The spring season is drawing to a close for Saline County high school athletics.

This week marks regional play in girls soccer, baseball and softball, with state tournament berths on the line. Regional track also takes place either Thursday and Friday with athletes looking to qualify for state.

The Ell-Saline softball team was the only county team to qualify for state on Tuesday night.

Sacred Heart softball reaches regional final, falls to Ell-Saline

The Sacred Heart softball team had three goals heading into the season:

Have a winning season, finish higher than fifth in the North Central Activities Association standings and make it to state.

However, the Knights came up short of their third goal with in an 11-1 loss to Saline County rival Ell-Saline in the Class 2-1A Belleville regional championship game Tuesday night. The Knights got to the championship game with a 12-0 victory over Canton-Galva and defeated Bennington in the opening round, 7-1.

Sacred Heart finished its season with a 12-11 record.

"We weren't expected to win as many," Sacred Heart coach Bob Martin said. "Emilee (Blythe) carried us and Ellie (Woodall) was right there with her. I'm proud of both those seniors."

Woodall and Blythe led the Knights' three-member senior class, along with Leslie Torres.

"Ellie was our best hitter and she led off for us," Martin said. "She gave us everything we needed up there and ran the bases for us. She was vocal.

"Emilee was our pitcher and she did a really great job striking out people. Our other senior, Leslie, she was our (team) mom. Everybody's got a role. It may not be the same role."

Salina South baseball falls in regional semifinal to Maize South

Facing Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division I foe Maize South, Salina South positioned itself for an upset.

But it was not meant to be.

Trailing 3-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning on Tuesday, the Mavericks scored three runs and rallied for a 5-3 victory.

South ended its season with an 8-13 record.

Southeast of Saline baseball and softball fall in regional semis to Halstead

It was not a good Tuesday for the Southeast of Saline baseball and softball teams.

Both saw their seasons end in the regional semifinals with 9-3 losses to Halstead.

Southeast baseball's season ended with a 17-5 record, while Southeast softball finished at 16-6.

Ell-Saline, Sacred Heart baseball fall in opening round of regionals

Both Saline County teams in the 2-1A regional hosted by Ell-Saline saw their seasons end in opening round play on Monday at James Matson Field.

The hosts fell 17-3 to Little River and finished with a 2-19 record. Sacred Heart was upset by Canton-Galva, 5-4, after the Eagles broke a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning. Sacred Heart had the bases loaded with two outs but could not tie the game.

Sacred Heart finished its season with a 9-11 record.

Central, South girls soccer eliminated in regional semifinals

Central and South had their seasons end in the regional semifinals.

The Mustangs had to play their way in with a 4-0 victory over Arkansas City on Monday. Maylin Owen scored two goals and had an assist in the win. However, their season came to an end on Tuesday night in a 6-0 loss to Goddard Eisenhower. The Mustangs finish their season with a 4-14 record.

The Cougars fell 7-0 to Bishop Carroll on Monday night, ending their season with a 6-11 record.

Central baseball, South softball seasons end

The Central baseball team saw its season end in a 15-2 loss to Bishop Carroll. The Mustangs finish their season with a 6-15 record.

The South softball team defeated AVCTL-I foe Maize South 9-5 and then gave the reigning state champions, Bishop Carroll, a test, but fell 3-0. The Cougars finish their season 11-11.
