Across Tennessee, characters from the big screen, led by "Hocus Pocus," which recently released a sequel, and Chucky, the murderous doll, topped the charts as well.

We asked several local retailers selling Halloween costumes what their top sellers are this year.

  1. Michael Myers

He's the classic, stoic and scary symbol for any season of fright, the silent character from the “Halloween” film franchise. He's always been a strong seller, said Tammy Walpole, the owner of All About Holidays. But Michael Myers enjoyed a bump this year in popularity due to a recently-released movie. Can you believe "Halloween Ends" marks movie No. 13? The original was released in 1978.

With "Hocus Pocus 2" making it's debut late last month, the Sanderson Sisters are making a more prominent appearance than ever before. Sarah, Winifred and Mary will more than likely fly by a few times in your neighborhood before the month is over, said Murfreesboro Party City employee Casandra Johnson.

Eleven, the character on the Netflix series — courageous, loyal, caring, yet the victim of traumatic upbringing and limited social skills — is popular this year, as are several boys. In fact, the characters are a steady seller in recent years, said Daniel Quarrick, handles online sales and shipping for Ultimate Party Super Store in Hendersonville.

4: “Beetlejuice”

The title character played by Michael Keaton in the 1988 movie has received enough requests to surprise Walpole, who isn’t sure why the costume has enjoyed consistent popularity. Perhaps it's because a Broadway show by the same name, waylaid by the pandemic, recently made its second debut, gaining popularity among theater-goers. Walpole estimated she's sold around a dozen Beetlejuice costumes, selling out her inventory. Perhaps it's because this obnoxious ghost can be a good couples costume when paired with Barbara Maitland (played by Geena Davis), though Beetlejuice sales have outpaced Maitland's.

5: Inflatables and disco themes

Inflatable costumes remain steady sellers. Walpole's Halloween costume store this year has experienced a bump in sales of 1970s and disco-related costumes, what the business owner believes is a reflection of an era that for some, is returning to style.

6: Zombies

Whether it's character from the Disney series "Z-O-M-B-I-E-S" or the Walking Dead variety, zombies have remained popular for years. The kid's show, particularly the character Zed Necrodopolis, has gained in popularity quickly which Quarrick believes is due to a strong livestream following.

Zombies, Johnson added, have been a yearly contender for top costume.

7: “Monster High”

These characters enjoyed a recent boost in popularity to a new release, “Monster High: The Movie.”

8. "Minons"

The yellow, gibberish-talking characters first made their debut 12 years ago with the release of "Despicable Me." More than a decade later, they're showing no signs of slowing down in terms of costume demand. With the release of "Minions: The rise of Gru" this summer, the little monsters are sure to remain popular for at least another year, Johnson said.
