Oct. 6—GRAND FORKS — The UND Wind Ensemble and University Band will present a combined concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the Chester Fritz Auditorium on the UND campus.

The concert theme, "ColourFULL Music," highlights diversity in the music community, said James Popejoy, who, along with graduate student Juanita Caballero Casas, will conduct both groups. Popejoy is a professor of music and director of bands at UND.
The theme is inspired by a movement started by Jodie Blackshaw, an Australian composer whose goal is the "seeding the future of music ...full of color, full of tolerance, full of equality, and full of respect," Popejoy said in a news release.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, the University Band will open the concert with the well-known Spanish march "Amparito Roca," by Jaime Texidor, he said.
The band will also perform works by contemporary African American composers — "Paintings," by William Owens, and "Haven," by Adrian B.Sims — and works by women composers including "One Life Beautiful," by Julie Giroux, and "Kalos Eides," by Carol Brittin Chambers. The University Band's performance will conclude with "Overture to a New Millennium," by Ed Huckeby.
The UND Wind Ensemble performance includes "Fanfare Politeia," by Kim Archer, and "Machu Picchu," by Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa. The ensemble will also perform works by African American composers Kelija Dunton, "Letters," and Omar Thomas' "A Mother of a Revolution!," as well as a contemporary tango "Mary Shelley Meets Frankenstein," by Erika Svanoe. Their program will conclude with "Blue Shades," one of award-winning composer Frank Ticheli's most popular works, Popejoy said.

The North Dakota Museum of Art has announced its 2022-23 season of "Sunday Concerts in the Gallery" series.
The series, which opened Sunday, Oct. 2, with a performance by the Dover Quartet, will continue with the following performances: Nov. 13 — Yi Qun Xu, cello, and Yoon Lee, piano; Feb. 19 — Marian Anderson String Quartet; March 26 — Valencia Baryton Project; April 23 — Italian Saxophone Quartet; and May 14 — Eliot Fisk, guitar.
All concerts begin at 2 p.m. The series is supported in part by the Myra Foundation.
In addition, the Museum's "Monday Concerts in the Schools," will bring these visiting musicians to area schools for workshops, master classes, or young audience concerts. For example, the Italian Saxophone Quartet is scheduled to perform April 24 for middle and high school students and community members at the Northwood Performing Arts Center.

Tickets are available for the annual Winter WUNDerland Candlelight Dinner and Private Concert, set for Dec. 2 at the Gorecki Alumni Center on the UND campus.
The evening begins with a social hour at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are $100 per person and sponsorship opportunities are available. Seating is limited; RSVPs are due Nov. 14.
The UND College of Arts and Sciences and UND Department of Music are hosting the event. Proceeds are used to support the UND Concert Choir.
For this event, the choir's director, Dean Jilek, creates a program that showcases student talent and enthusiasm.
"This is an event that students truly enjoy," Jilek said. "They just love doing it, and we appreciate the chance to raise funds to support their education and performance activities."
Brad Rundquist, dean of the UND College of Arts and Sciences, said, "Alumni and community support is vital to the choir's success, and this is a great way to celebrate their talent together."

The Traveling Art Exhibit, sponsored by the Northwest Minnesota Arts Council, opens Thursday, Oct. 6, at the Fosston Public Library.
The exhibit includes 17 original pieces of art by regional adult and student artists, chosen from work submitted for the Council's annual juried exhibit. Some of the pieces are for sale.
The artists whose work is on display are: Ross Hier, Mason Owens and Emily Balboa, all of Crookston; Elizabeth Kitchell-Rockstad, Jodi Peterson and Carlie Nehrus, all of Ada; Heidi Danos, Fosston; Stephanie Olson, Autumn Ruikka and Paige Sturre, all of Thief River Falls; Alicia Spilde and Nick Reitzel, both of Karlstad; Cindy Kolling, Gully; Kate Hammer, Roseau; Paulette Christianson, Badger; and Kinsley Oslund and Lakylie Brobst, both of Grygla.
