Critical deadlines begin this week for people who want to vote in the Oct. 14 Louisiana governor's primary election but aren't yet registered.

The deadline is Wednesday, Sept. 13 for those who want to register to vote in person, by mail or at the Office of Motor Vehicles who don't have a Louisiana driver's license or special ID card.

People who have a state driver's license or special ID card can register to vote through Sept. 23 through the GeauxVote Online Registration System.

Citizens may check their registration or register to vote online at www.GeauxVote.com. After registering, Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin recommends voters download the GeauxVote Mobile smartphone app. The app provides registration information as well as voting districts, sample ballots, polling place information and election results.

“It’s never been easier to register to vote in Louisiana — voters can register at their registrar’s office, the DMV, by mail or online," Ardoin said in a statement to USA Today Network. "I encourage all eligible citizens to register, update their registration, sign-up for electronic notifications at GeauxVote.com, and download the free, award-winning GeauxVote mobile app so they can make their voices heard during the October 14 election.”

The Oct. 14 primary features the governor's election as the marquee race, but voters will also make statewide choices on attorney general, lieutenant governor, secretary of state and treasurer.

Incumbent Republican Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain was automatically reelected without opposition, while Republican Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple was automatically elected after his only opponent withdrew from the race.

Early voting for the Oct. 14 election will take place from 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30-Saturday, Oct. 7 (excluding Sunday, Oct. 1).
