Gypsy Rose Blanchard was released from the Chillicothe Correctional Center early morning on Thursday, Dec. 28, 2023.

Blanchard, 32, was released from the Chillicothe Correctional Center on Dec. 28. She served eight years of a 10-year sentence for conspiring to kill her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, with her then-boyfriend Nick Godejohn in 2015. Godejohn remains in prison, serving a life sentence.

Throughout her childhood and much of young adulthood, Gypsy was allegedly a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental condition in which someone — in this case Dee Dee — makes another person ill for sympathy or gain.

Dee Dee was alleged to have made her daughter appear to have a range of physical and development ailments, including leukemia, asthma and muscular dystrophy, in order to gain disability payments and gifts from charity.

Gypsy spent most of her life in a wheelchair, believing she could not walk. Upon meeting Godejohn online, the two made plans to kill Dee Dee and escape to Wisconsin, where Godejohn was from.

On June 14, 2015, Springfield police were alerted to a post on Dee Dee's Facebook page that read, "That B*** is dead!" before Dee Dee's body was found dead in her home from multiple stab wounds. By this time, Gypsy and Godejohn were already in Wisconsin.

Following their arrest, Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a 10-year sentence. She became eligible for parole after serving 85% of her sentence.
