While I-90 has been closed from Chamberlain to the Wyoming state line and is now open from Rapid City to the Wyoming state border, I-29 from Watertown to the North Dakota border is expected to close.

According to a news release from the South Dakota Department of Transportation, substantial snow totals and sustained high winds are causing low visibility and snow/ice covered roads across the state making travel difficult to impossible.

I-90 from Rapid City to the Wyoming state border is open, but I-90 Rapid City to Chamberlain is expected to remain closed and 1-90 from Chamberlain to Mitchell is closing at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

Additionally, the state Department of Transportation anticipated closing 1-29 from Watertown to the North Dakota border at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Travelers on the interstate should expect to encounter slippery road conditions with continued areas of blowing snow. Snow removal equipment will be working. Extra caution is advised for those on the road.

According to the release, the combination of newly developing snow and sustained winds will make I-90 and 1-29 impassable during the evening and overnight hours.

Truck parking is full in Chamberlain. SDDOT and Department of Public Safety recommend semi drivers consider long-term parking options between Sioux Falls and Mitchell.

Accumulating snow and strong winds are continuing to make secondary highways impassable over an extended period of time and many state highways are posted with no travel advised. Many vehicles have become stuck and stranded in an attempt to travel on these state highways to avoid Interstate closures, which could create hazards for snowplow operators and may delay getting the sections of highway cleared.
