Here's what's happening with Bloomington area teams, Aug. 22-27

Saturday, Aug. 27

Boys' soccer

BLOOMINGTON SOUTH 2, CASTLE 0: This was a big one for the 3A No. 18 Panthers, who were handed a 4-0 loss in last year's regional final by the Knights. Castle has a big chunk of the pieces back from its semistate team, but it was on South to defend it's home turf. Just five minutes in, freshman Tom Henry Berry took a feed from sophomore Joe Degiorgio and scored to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead that held till halftime. Castle came out of the break on a mission, recording four corner kick opportunities in the first 10 minutes, so head coach Corbin Calvert used a mass substitution to spark his team and have a chat with his starters.

It worked. South gathered itself, just like senior CJ Santiago gathered a pass at the top of the box from Landon Ryner with 17:12 left, firing high and just inside the right post for a goal and a 2-0 lead.

South goes to 4-0-1 and up next, Martinsville and a trip to Terre Haute North for the CI opener.

BLOOMINGTON NORTH 2, BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE 1: A goal in each half lifted the Cougars (3-2-1), who led 2-0 and hung on. Stefan Bartlett hit from 25 yards out after a pass from Matt Ferguson. In the second half, Ethan Beeri won a header and the ball landed in front of Russell Bilohlavek who put it in the upper left corner. Dylan Stegemoller had two saves. "After discussing our weaknesses and how we needed to transition and make more composed decisions in the final third, we ended 2-1 against BNL and controlled the game," North coach Gonzalo Sanchez said. "It wasn’t the result I nor the team wanted as we still need to finish our chances especially when we are open."
